A stroke is not a single moment; it’s a lifelong journey. For 20 years, “Stroke Ain't No Joke” has transformed how communities understand strokes. What began as our Founders’ bold idea became a movement that has helped save lives, educate generations, and prove that culturally relevant health education can change outcomes.

We recently joined forces with Bayer, clinicians, survivors, care partners, advocates, and community leaders to continue the conversation around stroke prevention, recovery, and life after stroke for “Back on Beat: Stroke Recovery & What Comes Next.” Watch memorable moments from the conversation with our Co-Founder Dr. Olajide Williams, Founding Artist Doug E. Fresh, Dr. Barbara Vickrey, Dr. Mitchell Elkind, and stroke survivors Dr. Christine Cosby-Gaither, Dr. ShantaQuilette Develle, Tania Saiz, and Jose Garcia.

Progress depends on how we move forward together.

Twenty years ago, "Stroke Ain’t No Joke" helped change the conversation around stroke by using hip hop, culture, and storytelling to make life-saving information real, memorable, and accessible.

Today, that work continues through "Back on Beat: Stroke, Recovery & What Comes Next," presented in partnership with Bayer.

We’re bringing together clinicians, survivors, caregivers, advocates, and cultural leaders to reflect on how far stroke awareness and recovery have come — and what’s possible for the future.

Because stroke is not only a medical event. It’s a lifelong journey shaped by prevention, healing, resilience, and community. Hear the song that started it all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4dygYaNyhY

Stroke is not just a moment. It’s a lifelong journey.

20 years ago, "Stroke Ain’t No Joke" used hip hop, culture, and storytelling to change the conversation around stroke—turning awareness into action in communities everywhere.

Today, that message still matters. Recovery, prevention, and support continue long after the first event, and every day is an opportunity to move forward.

We're excited to launch our new Community Health Worker Toolkit in the Pulse Check Atrial fibrillation (AFib) Resource Collection. AFib—an irregular heartbeat—affects millions of people and the number is rising. Yet the gap between awareness and effective treatment means that AFib often goes undiagnosed, leading to disabling strokes and other heart-related health issues.

Driven by song and storytelling, anchored in evidence-based best practices, and developed in partnership with community health workers and committed supporters, our proven health literacy approach is now accessible to a new group of health allies. 🌎 This , the artist, educator, author, and Public Enemy member Jahi Torman reminds us about our role in helping young people see their role in protecting our planet.

Hip hop can be a powerful vehicle for truth, community, and health conversations that otherwise go unspoken. Hip hop icon and our Advisory Council member Darryl DMC McDaniels shared with PARADE Magazine how openness and connection are essential to healing— and how the power of music and culture can bring health topics into the open, build health literacy, and support stronger, healthier communities.
