Have you played the piano in Union Square Park yet? 🎹✨

For the past few weeks, we’ve had the privilege of hosting a piano beautifully painted by artist located in Triangle Park.

Calicho painted the piano with New York’s native birds—nature’s original music makers—intertwined with a flowing red line. Inspired by the “red string theory” (the belief that people destined to be in each other’s lives are invisibly connected by a red string, linking them in every lifetime), Calicho believes this connection isn’t always a person. It can be a hobby, a passion, or for so many of us in this park, music.

⏳ Catch it while you can: You can visit, play, and experience the piano daily from 9 AM–5 PM through next week before it’s gone!

📍Triangle Park area of Union Square Park (Located on 14th Street between Union Square East and Broadway)

A huge thank you to for stopping by and sharing this beautiful original song with us. 🎶

Evelyn’s Playground is getting a new fence! 💚

Construction to replace the deteriorating fence began today, June 1st, and will continue through July 30th. During this time, sections of the playground will close in phases as work progresses.

Please forgive our appearance during this time as we make these much-needed improvements to the playground.

This project was made possible by your votes during NYC Council District 2’s 2024 Participatory Budgeting process and support from NYC Parks & Recreation. Thank you to everyone who helped make this project happen!

Our Center Lawn is finally open again! 🌱

Our team had different ideas on how to announces it, but the message stays the same: the lawn is back and ready to enjoy!

As you visit, please help us care for the lawn by following the posted park guideline. ☀️

There are so many hidden gems in Union Square! We’re taking the guesswork out of your next visit and sharing our staff favorites. 🕵

Episode 2 is officially here! Last time we checked out Pizzazz, but today our Deputy Director & Chief Strategy Officer, Ed, is taking us to one of his longtime neighborhood favorites: Rainbow Falafel!

Located at 26 E 17th St, this family-run kiosk has been a Union Square staple since 1992. From loaded platters to chicken shawarma, there’s plenty to choose from—but Ed always loves a classic falafel.

Hungry yet? Stop by Rainbow Falafel for your next lunch run! 🥙

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 2026 Annual Meeting!

It was a great chance to look back on everything we accomplished over the past year and share what’s ahead for Union Square. We talked about our priorities for the year to come, including the potential expansion of the BID, modernizing the public realm, and continuing to build a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant neighborhood.

Thank you to Emily Weidenhof, Assistant Commissioner at the NYC Department of Transportation, for sharing information about the 14th Street Plan and the future of the corridor.

We were also happy to welcome Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Council Member Harvey Epstein, who shared their continued support for the BID and our work in the neighborhood.

Read more about our accomplishments and what’s ahead in our 2026 Annual Report at the link in our bio.

Who knew trash could look this good? ✨🗑️

You’ll spot our new CITIBINs throughout Union Square, helping keep the neighborhood clean, safe, and looking its best.

The design concept, conceived by The Working Assembly, features bold vertical stripes in a mix of colors — a classic pattern with a modern sensibility, and perfectly fun for Union Square.

Proof that even the most practical things can have personality. ♻️

This past weekend, we explored Union Square art installations with InCitu, , and Fitzhugh Karol for ’s 2026 Jane’s Walk Festival! 🎨

Led by our Director of Planning, Tali, alongside Urban Design Intern Christina, the guided walk highlighted a range of public artworks currently on view in Union Square, including:

• Get Outside 14th Street mural by Shantell Martin( )

• Love Continuum by Yoni Alter (Andrew Logan Projects )

• Illuminating Energy Flow by Sophia Chizuco ( )

• Recess: Reads by Fitzhugh Karol ()

Tali and Christina demonstrated how site-specific works bring surprise and delight into everyday public spaces, and how public art is experienced and managed in a busy urban environment. The walk also highlighted the range of mediums that are possible in public space, from sculptures to asphalt murals, to vinyl wraps, and the way technology is opening new ways to engage with art.

and shared the AR integration with Recess: Reads, showcasing Fitzhugh Karol’s colorful designs through geo-anchored AR. The artist’s signature shapes extend into the space around the sculpture, playfully positioned throughout the square to create an immersive, site-specific experience. is a NYC-based startup using augmented reality to bring the future of city planning to life. Beyond enhancing the experience of Recess: Reads, their platform allows people to visualize proposed housing, transit, placemaking, and climate resilience projects at real scale in the spaces where they will be built.

Our newest 14th Street mural is here! ✨

We teamed up with Merrell, Colossal Media, and NYC DOT Art to bring “Get Outside” by Shantell Martin to Union Square.

The mural is part of Merrell’s “Outside in the City” global program, bringing together public art, community experiences, and creative partnerships. Public art like this invites us to slow down and enjoy art in unexpected places.
