T'ruah T’ruah brings the Torah’s ideals to life by empowering rabbis and cantors to be human rights leaders.

- T'ruah mobilizes rabbis and their communities to protect human rights in the United States, Canada, Israel, and the occupied territories. This work includes engaging rabbis and Jewish communities in advocating to their elected officials; helping rabbis to testify in state legislatures about bills that affect human rights; and advocating for policies in the U.S., Canada, and Israel that protec

t the human rights of all residents.

- T'ruah trains rabbis and rabbinical students to be strong human rights leaders. Through our summer fellowship, a select cohort of rabbinical/cantorial students gain the experience and skills to be human rights leaders. Through our year-in-Israel program, more than 60 students studying in Jerusalem participate in monthly human rights experiences and reflection sessions. We run webinars and in-person seminars for rabbis to learn to write and place op-eds, and to bring human rights issues to their communities.

- T'ruah promotes rabbis and cantors as moral voices on the most crucial issues of the day. We place op-eds and media stories that feature rabbis bringing Jewish values to current human rights concerns. We have testified to the Senate and to federal agencies about issues ranging from solitary confinement to human trafficking to discrimination against American Muslims.

As people detained at Delaney Hall in NJ continue their hunger strike, Congress is once again debating whether to provide more funding to the Department of Homeland Security.
No one should have to risk their health to be heard. Yet from New Jersey to California, New Mexico, Texas, and beyond, detained immigrants are undertaking hunger strikes to protest conditions and demand dignity.

Delaney Hall is not an isolated case. It is part of a system that repeatedly uses detention, surveillance, and enforcement in ways that separate families, undermine human dignity, and harm communities. We've seen ICE overreach in cities and towns across the country, and we are seeing it again in New Jersey.

As Jews, we know that every person is created b'tzelem Elohim—in the image of God. Our taxpayer dollars should not fund abuse, neglect, or the expansion of a detention system that treats people as less than fully human.

Congress must reject additional funding for immigration detention and enforcement and instead invest in policies that uphold dignity, safety, and justice for all.

Forty years ago, mainstream Jewish groups had no trouble denouncing Meir Kahane and everything he stood for, recognizing the threat his racist and perverse viewpoints posed to Israeli democracy—and to Judaism. But this week, Bezalel Smotrich and other far-right Israeli ministers who promote hate and violence were guests of honor at the Israel Day Parade.

Enough. American Jews want leaders who will stand up for our values.

Celebrate with us! 🎉 We're honoring 5 extraordinary human rights heroes this Tuesday in NYC (and on Zoom!). The gala is one of our favorite nights of the year, when we recognize the work of rabbis, cantors, and other Jewish leaders for human rights and get inspired and energized for what comes next. https://buff.ly/nJFM8Br

Rabbi Rachel Kahn-Troster and other T’ruah clergy joined an interfaith prayer vigil for the hunger strikers at Delaney Hall this afternoon. People on hunger strike inside Delaney Hall are demanding nothing more than what we all deserve: human dignity. What you can do: Read their letters and demands, support their families (link in our stories), and get plugged in to local efforts to get ICE out of all our communities.

NEW from Rabbi Jill Jacobs: It's time to reimagine what a parade that celebrates New York Jewish life could look like.

Imagine a celebration, writes the CEO of T'ruah, in which Israel would be part of the Jewish story, but not the whole story.

Thank you Senator Kim. We need more members of Congress to stand against ICE cruelty and violence.

T'ruah member Rabbi Mike Rothbaum is a rabbi in San Diego. He writes: "No, targeted groups don’t always agree. Sometimes we say things that make each other furious. That doesn’t change the fundamental truth: We are safest when all marginalized groups stand in solidarity with each other."

We are safest when all marginalized groups stand in solidarity with each other.
