Her Justice Shifts The Power so women can build safer, stronger futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

When a person receives their work permit “it’s like the world opens”, according to Fabiola, a Her Justice client who got her permit in 2018. But right now it can take up to 5 YEARS after filing to be able to work legally in the U.S.

At Her Justice, we know it can be different. Our newest policy report offers stories, data, context, and nuance to help you understand how our immigration and civil justice systems work today – and it provides concrete recommendations to federal, state, and local policymakers for how to reform these systems for all of our benefit.

Want to hear more from our clients, in their own words, about how their lives changed with work authorization?

OUT TODAY! Her Justice’s newest policy research report “Stories from Immigrant Survivors of Gender-Based Violence: The Impact of Work Authorization”.

Based on a 5-year study with Her Justice immigration clients, this report explores the life-changing impact of receiving a work permit, which confers the ability to work legally in the United States.

Over a third of Her Justice clients partner with us to file for legal status in this country. In their own words, by the time they find us, they’ve often been struggling to stay afloat in the U.S. for years. And from there, even with a lawyer at their side, it takes up to five years to receive the legal right to work. In that time, they’re vulnerable to exploitation on many fronts – from employers, landlords, and abusive intimate partners to name a few – and charting a path forward towards the life they envision for themselves and their families is difficult.

We know things can be different.

Once clients receive their work permit, “it’s like the world opens” (Fabiola, Her Justice client, received work permit in 2018) and they can begin building safer, stronger futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

This report captures stories and data critical to understanding how the U.S.’s immigration civil justice systems function today. It provides timely context and nuance relevant to our national discussions about immigration policy and work authorization brought about by today’s influx of migrants to our borders. And it builds on our clients’ experiences to make recommendations to federal, state, and local policymakers about how to reform the system so that the greatest number of immigrant women can obtain and preserve the best possible immigration status through a process that prioritizes their safety and dignity.

Her Justice is deeply grateful to the women who trust us with their journeys. We are proud to continue our commitment to research, advocacy, and direct services that remove barriers built into our immigration and civil justice systems.

Together, with your support, we’re putting power back in the hands of women like our clients – and advocating for policy changes that keep it there.

What do safer, stronger futures look like for our clients once they have their work permit? We asked – and they spoke about their dreams for themselves, their families, and their communities.

In their own words, here’s what work authorization means for their communities – OUR communities! Look back to our earlier posts to hear what it means for their own lives and their families’ lives.

These quotes come from Her Justice’s original research report “Stories from Immigrant Survivors of Gender-Based Violence: The Impact of Work Authorization” – coming in November!

It captures stories and data critical to understanding how the U.S.’s immigration system and civil justice system work today. It also provides recommendations to reform these systems so that the greatest number of immigrant women can obtain and preserve the best possible immigration status through a process that prioritizes their safety and dignity.

One way we Shift The Power at Her Justice? Helping immigrant survivors of gender-based violence obtain work authorization.

We were curious: what do safer, stronger futures look like for our clients once they have their work permit? We asked – and they spoke about their dreams for themselves, their families, and their communities.

In their own words, here’s what work authorization means for their families. Last week we shared their thoughts about how it impacted their lives – and next week we’ll share what they say about its impact on their communities.

These quotes come from Her Justice’s original research report “Stories from Immigrant Survivors of Gender-Based Violence: The Impact of Work Authorization” – coming in November! It captures stories and data critical to understanding how the U.S.’s immigration system and civil justice system work today. Survivors of trafficking are provided relief under U.S. immigration law by the T-Visa. 97% of survivors file with the help of an attorney. This shows the importance of legal representation in this area and the need for more attorneys and resources for trafficking survivors. Her Justice is proud to support this work through our Trafficking Survivors Resiliency Project.

In October, SCOTUS will begin hearing U.S. v. Rahimi to decide if abusive partners are allowed to possess guns. If ruled for Rahimi, this would dismantle current federal and state protections designed to make our communities safer.

Research is clear. When an abuser has a gun, they’re 5x more likely to kill their partner. And most mass shooters practice control and abuse at home first – 68% of mass shooters from 2014-2019 had a history of domestic violence or killed partners/family in their spree.

This upcoming ruling matters to the safety of our clients – and to all of us. Restricting known abusers from having guns helps keep domestic abuse victims alive. And it can prevent mass shootings.

Stay tuned as Her Justice educates and advocates on this front in the coming months.

Her Justice is proud to have advocated for Senate Bill 5162/Assembly Bill 5772! This policy change will remove significant barriers for low-income New Yorkers — especially in housing, civil, and family court matters — and create a more fair playing field for litigants like our clients.
