The GFWC New York City Juniors is a women’s civic organization dedicated to serving the city of New York through volunteerism. We are committed to empowering the lives of our members, as they engage each other and their communities, to follow the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ rich legacy of social activism. The GFWC hosts a proud lineage of dynamic, influential, and civically engaged women
who did not wait for change, but were the agents of change. New York City resident and journalist, Jane Cunningham Croly, formed a women's club in 1868. After not being admitted to an event honoring Charles Dickens because of her s*x, Croly formed this organization for women to give them a voice and years later the Federation of Women’s Clubs was formed in 1890. The GFWC has been the guiding force behind several landmark policy changes, such as child labor laws, women’s suffrage, and the Americans with Disabilities Act among others. Additionally, the GFWC has played a key role in establishing 75 percent of our nation’s libraries, creating the National Parks Service, and forming the United Nations. It is with this powerful legacy in mind that the New York Juniors are committed to engaging each other to better our city. In conjunction with the GFWC, the NYC Juniors are committed to “unity in diversity.” This relates not only our membership, but also in the breadth of our service project categories including Arts, Conservation Education, Home Life, International Affairs, and Public Affairs. Having a diverse membership, creates a vibrant and powerful voice for the club, while diversity in service projects gives our members the opportunity to follow and develop their individual passions. The GFWC NYC Juniors allows working women, whether it is at home or the work place, flexibility in completing their member requirements, while at the same time holding them accountable to the club. We want all women to feel as though our member requirements are manageable and conducive to their busy schedules. NYC Juniors is an opportunity to develop new friendships, support one another, and make a difference in what we think is important. Not only is our time dedicated to improving our communities and the world, but also to fostering growth in each Junior.
