Adolescents Cultivating & Learning About Safer Societies (A-CLASS)

A-CLASS (Adolescents Cultivating and Learning About Safe Societies) is a sexual health program at The Child Center of NY.

We work with young people, ages 13 to 24, to address issues like HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and unwanted pregnancies in the community, particularly in neighborhoods in Queens, New York. The program trains and supports young people, who, in partnership with adults, work to create fun and easy ways to learn about healthy sexual practices and healthcare services for young people.

Currently, we have trained a group of seven high school/college-aged peer educators who provide workshops and do presentations around the Borough of Queens. Though there is a heavy focus on sexual health, the peer leaders also address issues such as substance abuse, relationship violence, gangs, and other issues that youth may face in their neighborhoods and how those issues impact sexual health choices. The peer leaders often incorporate artistic pieces into their presentations, including skits, poems, and films. Additionally, we connect youth to service learning opportunities and resources, as well as organize events to link youth to their communities.
