Young Leader Chelsy Ovilla Awarded 2026 YSA Grant for The Corona Bridge Project.

Chelsy Ovilla, a 16-year-old youth leader, has been awarded a 2026 Youth Service America (YSA) Grant, funded by the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, for her initiative, The Corona Bridge Project.

Chelsy’s project is deeply personal and rooted in her experience growing up in Corona, Queens—where many families face limited access to resources, youth programs, and opportunities. Rather than accept these challenges, Chelsy is transforming them into action. Through The Corona Bridge Project, she is creating pathways for young people to lead, serve, and strengthen their own community.

This spring, Chelsy will lead a Day of Service in partnership with Familia Food Pantry, bringing together 25–30 student volunteers from across Queens. In the weeks leading up to the event, she is organizing school-based food drives across multiple high schools, empowering student ambassadors to take ownership and lead collection efforts within their own schools.

On the day of service, volunteers will play an active role in supporting local families by sorting and organizing donated food, assembling food boxes, distributing supplies alongside pantry staff, and assisting with logistics and cleanup. A dedicated team will also document the event, helping amplify the impact of youth-led service in the community.

Together, this effort aims to support over 100 local families while providing students with a meaningful, hands-on leadership experience.

How to Get Involved
Students (ages 14+): Sign up to volunteer for the Day of Service
Schools & Clubs: Partner to host a food drive or serve as a school ambassador
Community Members: Help spread the word or contribute supplies or volunteer to assist with transportation of items to the food pantry.
Local Partners & Sponsors: Support the project through donations or in-kind contributions.

“Our young people showed up ready to work, ready to serve, and ready to make a visible difference in their community,” said Ted Psahos, Executive Director of Projekt NYC. “Their energy and commitment are exactly what makes New York City so special.”

Projekt NYC’s Teen Advisory Council played a key leadership role, managing check‑in, supervising volunteer teams, and ensuring that all students received verified community service hours following the event. Their coordination helped the day run smoothly and ensured every volunteer felt supported and engaged.

The Astoria Park Alliance expressed gratitude for the partnership and the remarkable energy the teens brought to the day’s efforts.

America’s Field Trip invites students in grades 3–12 to be part of this historic milestone by sharing their perspectives on what America means to them — with the chance to earn a once-in-a-lifetime field trip experience at one of 16 different iconic American landmarks or cultural sites, including Mount Rushmore, the National Archives Museum, Kennedy Space Center, and Yellowstone National Park — just to name a few.
Visit America250.org/FieldTrip/Rules for Official Contest Rules.
★ Deadline: Monday, March 30, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. PT/8:00 p.m. ET.
★ Eligibility: Any student in grades 3–12 who is a legal resident of any of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the five U.S. territories is eligible to enter. First- and second-prize awardees from the previous two America’s Field Trip contests are not eligible to enter or win.
★ Submission Requirements: Students at each grade level may create artwork, including physical artwork submitted through a high-res photo, a digital drawing, or a written response.

★ Prizes: NEW! 125 first-place awardees and their designated chaperone will receive travel and lodging for a three-day, two-night trip to a select historical or cultural site in July and August 2026. 125 second-place awardees will receive $500 cash awards and three educators will each earn $1,000.
