Alumni & Friends' (A&F) inspiring community of graduates, parents, and friends works together to support the school and its students. We raise funds to enhance the arts education at LaGuardia, and ensure that all students, regardless of family income, can pursue their talents to the fullest. We also help connect alumni with each other and the school through reunions and other events. A&F’s endowme

nt provides more than $300,000 to the school and its students in scholarships, awards, support for each department, and equipment. Generous donors have made this possible and it is the goal of A&F to grow this endowment further to provide even more assistance, particularly as the school faces further budget cuts and its needs are greater than ever.

Arthur Mitchell (PA ‘52) was a famed dancer, choreographer, and founder of the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Mitchell attended the High School of Performing Arts, which eventually led to a scholarship to the School of American Ballet. In 1955, he made history as the first black male principal dancer for the New York City Ballet, a role he ultimately left in 1969.

During the height of the civil rights movement, Mitchell, along with Karel Shook, founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem. They created a haven for dancers of all colors who craved training and the opportunity to excel in classical ballet, building a company that exemplified what is possible when an inclusive approach to art is allowed to evolve and thrive.

Arthur Mitchell had a passion for dance and believed in the transformative power of the arts. He sadly passed away in 2018.

Congratulations to Olga Mill (LaG ‘03) on her Emmy nomination for Outstanding Contemporary Costumes For A Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her work on “Beef!”

Born in Ukraine and immigrating to New York as a child, Olga’s path to costume design began with the desire to assimilate. Carefully observing the visual cues that shaped identity, social dynamics, and belonging sparked a lifelong fascination with clothing as a form of storytelling. At LaGuardia, she explored set and costume design, building the foundation for the acclaimed career that followed.

Today, Olga’s impressive body of work includes “Boardwalk Empire,” “Eileen,” “Hereditary,” and “Love Lies Bleeding.” Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

We are saddened to share that James Burrows (M&A ‘58) passed away yesterday at 85.

For more than five decades, James touched countless lives as one of the most influential directors in television history. His remarkable body of work includes beloved shows such as “Cheers,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Taxi,” “Friends,” and every episode of “Will and Grace” during its original run.

Having directed over 1,000 TV episodes, he amassed 46 Emmy nominations, with 11 wins, and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2006.

His legacy will live on through the countless artists he inspired.
