Wikimedia NYC is looking for someone to help us build community in person and online. Our new Membership and Events Manager will run everything from monthly member gatherings and edit-a-thons to our annual Wikipedia Day celebration, and will lead how we welcome and support our members.

In July, Richard Knipel — The City University of New York Newmark Wikimedian-in-Residence and board chair of Wikimedia NYC — traveled to Paris for 2026.

Besides delivering a lightning talk (see below for YT link), Richard organized two sessions: a Wiki-Fashion Show, where attendees showcased Wikimedia-themed outfits and shared the stories behind them, and a Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network, bringing WiR practitioners together to discuss the future of the role, including AI, funding models, and cross-organizational collaboration.

Richard's lightning talk made the case that "Wikipedia can (and should!) be the front page of the Internet."

Wikimedia NYC's annual summer Wiknic returns! Join Wikimedians from across NYC on Roosevelt Island for a picnic-meets-edit-a-thon on Sunday, August 9th, from 2–7pm.

Wikimedia NYC's Wiki Loves Fútbol watch party at Prime Produce in NYC was covered by The Athletic!

Staff editor Rebecca Tauber joined us on July 10th as we watched the Spain-Belgium World Cup quarterfinal and edited Wikipedia, part of Wiki Loves Fútbol, a WikiLatinos campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Latino football culture during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The article highlights the volunteer editors who make Wikipedia possible, and the strict standards they follow, including verified sources, notable topics, and no AI.

Support from Craig Newmark Philanthropies helps us convene these events, which in turn supports Wikipedia's decentralized, self-governed model that helps keep open knowledge on the Internet free and accurate.

The City University of New York is continuing to expand its Open Educational Resource (OER) programs with Wiki. Its Wiki Faculty Fellows, sponsored by Craig Newmark Philanthropies, are joined this term by a new cohort: Wikimedian-in-Residence Richard Knipel (WM NYC's very own) is collaborating with a group of Lehman College faculty who are developing OER courses built around Wiki platforms.

Last Friday, Wikimedia NYC 🗽 hosted a Wiki Loves Fútbol Watch Party at Prime Produce — and 25 Wikimedians showed up to celebrate the World Cup while improving Wikipedia's coverage of Latino fútbol culture, belonging, and economic power. ⚽🌎

Participants contributed across two tracks: editing Wikipedia articles on Latino soccer history, players, and communities ✍️, and photographing watch party culture for Wikimedia Commons 📸. Together they added sources, expanded articles, updated Wikidata, and documented the energy of a World Cup crowd — all while cheering on the beautiful game. 🏆

The online campaign continues through July 19, 2026. It's open to Wikimedians in any language 🌐.
