✨ Today, we continue our celebration by spotlighting: Dr. Elaine Ruiz López, Puerto Rican CEO & Founder of International Leadership Charter High School and author ✨

As a first-generation Puerto Rican, Dr. López embraces her heritage—a powerful blend of West African, Taíno, and Spaniard ancestry.

With more than 20 years of service in the charter sector, Dr. López serves as Chair of the Latino Charter Leaders Roundtable. For her, being a Latina leader in this space is both a responsibility and an honor—an act of social justice and love. She knows failure is not an option when representing children in marginalized communities.

She deeply admires Justice Sonia Sotomayor, another trailblazing Puerto Rican from the South Bronx, for her integrity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice for all.

Guided by her roots, experiences, and servant leadership, Dr. López reminds us of the power of representation, perseverance, and the fight for equitable education. 💪🏽❤️

This Hispanic Heritage Month, BLACC is celebrating the Hispanic and Latinx educators and students whose dedication, resilience, and passion strengthen our schools and communities. 🌟

✨ Today, we spotlight: Luz Tavarez, a BLACC Board Member ✨

Rooted in her Dominican heritage, Luz carries forward the values of hard work and responsibility passed down from her parents. That sense of responsibility has guided her life and continues to inspire her today.

These values are also reflected in her Catholic faith, where she finds inspiration in Pope Francis’ humility and acceptance—leadership qualities that have encouraged many to reconnect with their spirituality.

Guided by both her upbringing and her faith, Luz views education as the foundation for opportunity and success. Public charter schools create a pathway for families like hers—families who deserve the freedom to choose the best education and future for their children.

Luz is a testament to the strength, perseverance, and faith that define the Hispanic community. We thank her and commend her longstanding efforts to ensure that all kids have access to a high quality public education. 💪🏽❤️

Despite decades of effort, students of color in New York are still significantly less likely than their White peers to read or do math at grade level.

It is a status quo that is unacceptable. Our kids deserve better.

The research is clear, when students of color see someone who looks like them at the front of the classroom, it increases their chances of graduating high school and going to college.
