The Opportunity Agenda Working to advance the impact of social justice communications

We believe that opportunity should be full and equal and that greater opportunity benefits everyone. Every day, social justice leaders work to expand opportunity by advancing policies and a culture that support the rights and voices of all people.

“When you support your city’s immigrants, you support your city’s prosperity.” - of

Read our interview with Ogunjimi and learn about the Washington Prosperity Campaign, a narrative change initiative designed to uplift the prosperity that Black immigrants contribute to Washington D.C. Ogunjimi drew inspiration from TOA and NYIC’s New York Proud campaign which launched last year.

On the third day of the NIL Closing Event, we heard the final round of narrative intervention pitches devised by our incredible fellows. We are so grateful to our Creative Advisors Elena Ketelsen Gonzàles () and Caron Atlas () for once again providing thoughtful and insightful feedback, offering their expertise and curiosity to strengthen the fellows’ projects.💡

Through a unique combination of arts and advocacy, our fellows’ work bolsters movements for social change. We are so proud to see how far their projects have come, and we can’t wait to see their impact in the world. 🤩

Day 2 of the Narrative Innovators Lab closing event! 🎉

Today our fellows began presenting their narrative intervention pitches in a space that encourages creativity, risk taking, and growth. Presenters received feedback from our incredible creative advisors Elena Ketelsen Gonzàles () and Caron Atlas () as well as their fellow cohort members.

From advocating for undocumented students in higher education to sharing untold stories about our immigrant elders through food, our fellows are embracing the challenge to shift the narrative toward justice and opportunity for all. 💫

At the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, Priscilla works to shut down Operation Lone Star (OLS), a multi-billion dollar scheme that threatens the safety and dignity of people in Texas. By sharing the unique stories of immigrant communities, she is educating lawmakers about the harms of OLS and changing the way we talk about safety at the border.

Read Priscilla's reflections from her time as a Narrative Innovators Lab fellow and how she uses the power of storytelling in her immigration advocacy work!

Do immigrants pay taxes? Yes! 💸 Should that be our focus? No! 🦋

There is so much misinformation circulating about immigrants. By design, the false and harmful stories behind common immigration myths aim to justify mass deportation by dehumanizing our families, friends, and neighbors.

While it may be tempting to debunk every myth you hear—to tell people why they're not true—the best way to respond is by telling positive stories that lead with shared values. This helps people see the bigger picture and focus on solutions.

Our new guide provides practical guidance for your conversations on social media or at the dinner table! Use it as an antidote to fear-based narratives.

Using dehumanizing language to describe certain groups of people can perpetuate stigma and stoke fear and division against them. But simple shifts can make a big impact in the way we talk and think about systemic reform.

By adjusting our language, we can help emphasize the humanity of those impacted by the criminal justice and immigration systems and advocate for fair solutions. Try it out today!

We know how important it is to reclaim narratives for immigrant justice. We cannot allow the opposition’s harmful narratives shape our policies and criminalize our communities.

The Narrative Research Lab is continuing to host monthly webinars with experts in the field to strengthen our movement and build us toward a pro-immigrant worldview. We’re with you through the challenges ahead.
