Stage I and stage II hormone receptor-positive breast cancer was more likely to shrink after hormonal therapy before surgery in Black women than in white women. But Black women had worse outcomes than white women if the breast cancer was a higher stage.

While white women of European descent are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, women of African descent are more likely to die from their disease.

Women of African, Hispanic, and Latinx descent are also more likely to be diagnosed at an earlier age and with more aggressive breast cancer.

While overall rates of breast cancer in Black and White women are about the same, Black women have a higher mortality rate from breast cancer. This disparity is attributed to several factors, such as genetics, the type of breast cancer many Black women have, and differences in access to healthcare, including early detection and diagnosis.

It’s no secret that communities of color have struggled with the U.S. health care system based on years of discrimination, unethical care, poor access and policies that disadvantage them.
