Shakedown trip on fireboat Harvey. Despite a chilly beginning, the day became glorious! Despite this being her 95th year, the engines purred like kittens and ran perfectly. An excellent start to the season!

The final trip of the season, celebrating our dear friends and hosts at Pier 66. They provide a loving home for our beloved fireboat John J Harvey, and we are so grateful! The weather was perfect; a lovely way to conclude our 26th year of public trips on this venerable historic fireboat!

On this day in 1931 fireboat John J. Harvey was launched into the waters of NY harbor and began her illustrious career! 94 years later she continues service as a fully functional museum vessel, welcoming visitors from all around the world. Our amazing volunteers keep her in excellent condition, and she continues to be a marvel of engineering and design. Here's to many more years!

This is Cuauhtemoc, the Mexican sailing ship that had the tragic allusion with the Brooklyn Bridge in May. She's been repaired at Caddell's Shipyard in Staten Island, and for the next few days, at least until Friday, she is moored at Pier 86, by the Intrepid. The best view is from the end of Pier 84. She is a beautiful sight; take a moment to remember the young cadets so tragically lost.

Beneath the surface of everyone who was here on that awful day, there is a deep well of grief and sorrow. There is also an equally deep well of heartswelling pride in the enormous resilience, courage, and kindness of so many who ran to help, of so many who gave solace and assistance, of so many who donated and shared and wept with us and held us up. Part of that pride is in the maritime response to the attack, how hundreds of vessels in an uncoordinated effort became an effective, untiring part of the rescues in the largest response since the WWII evacuation of Normandie. We are humbled to have been a part of that effort, in the company of so many extraordinary mariners. Never Forget.
