On September 24th, A restoration project was done to The CITYarts Mosaic Rolling Bench! The mosaic tile benches surrounding the General Grant National Memorial was created between 1972-1974. A team of Professional artists featuring Pedro Silva and architects Moshe Shaw and Philip Danzig, as well as thousands of community volunteers were able to bring this bench to life. The Mosaic Rolling Bench was commissioned by the National Park Service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of President Ulysses S. Grant’s designation of Yellowstone as the first National Park. The project sought to raise community awareness of President Grant’s historical significance and to beautify the park. With the help of Flad Architects volunteers, the vision continues! ☮️✨🎊

CITYarts and CASW yesterday celebrated the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the mural on the Shakespeare Steps, together with our wonderful participants from the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).

For six weeks, our youth participants worked on the stairs—famously known as the “Joker Stairs”—under the guidance of artist Fiona Agababian.

We celebrated so much more than the completion of a mural.

We celebrated learning new skills, from painting outdoors to understanding the techniques and process of bringing a large-scale mural together. We celebrated teamwork, creativity, responsibility, and community.

And most importantly, we celebrated the friendships they formed along the way.

These young people came together as a team, shared experiences, overcame challenges, and created something meaningful for their community. The mural will remain on the Shakespeare Steps, but the friendships, experiences, and memories they created during these six weeks will stay with them forever.

This is what CITYarts is all about: Create. Educate. Transform. Empower.

Congratulations to all our artist assistants who received their certificates to mark this special occasion. We are so proud of you!
