Youth Take Charge The Student Coalition Against Modern-Day Slavery

Youth Take Charge educates high school students students about human trafficking through a two-pronged approach. First, our team presents an interactive workshop that includes an overview of the issue on both a global and domestic scale. This workshop is presented in high school classrooms, after-school programs, and community center programs on a one-time basis. Students inspired by the workshop

are then encouraged to form self-led anti-trafficking clubs at their high schools. To help them through the process, Youth Take Charge will mentor students by providing leadership and activist skill-training in addition to our curriculum on human trafficking. Youth Take Charge will not only engage students to think critically about the issue, but also equip them with the necessary tools to transform their education into thoughtful, self-led action.

"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." - Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1984.

What are your thoughts on this statement? Have you taken action in the wake of the non-indictment announcements? Is this an issue that you and your peers are discussing in school?

“One of the great liabilities of history is that all too many people fail to remain awake through great periods of social change. Every society has its protectors of status quo and its fraternities of the indifferent who are notorious for sleeping through revolutions. Today, our very survival depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant and to face the challenge of change.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Repost from Sarah Khimjee: "Happy Giving Tuesday :) Throwback to Hillcrest's GirlUp Club's 5k "Run for Rights" We had over 65 walkers on that cold morning and raised over $1200 within two weeks. Utterly proud of our members and thankful for our supporters as we work on raising more money for SchoolCycle to send girls in Malawi to school."

Dani and Blair, reporting live from the Run for Rights 5K at Hillcrest High, where we are supporting some Youth Take Charge mentees in their activism. We're so impressed by the high school students from the Girl Up club who organized this event, as well as those who got up at 7am on this cold Saturday to be upstanding world citizens! Girl Up raised OVER $400 prior to the 5K, and of course, more today. All proceeds fund bicycles as a means of SAFE transportation to and from school for girls in Ethiopia.
