Our last committee for CMUNCE XXI is Wolves, Goats, and Cabbages: Three-Way JCC!
In this three-way JCC, Europe, Germany, and Russia are all finding their way into the new century. We start the clock in the year 1998 on the eve of President Boris Yeltsin’s reign; the once-popular politician no longer holds the public’s confidence, not aided by the recent 1998 rouble crisis. The ghost of Russia’s Soviet past haunts a nation still searching for its national identity years after the abrupt collapse of the formally formidable Soviet Union. Chaos reigns in Chechnya, teetering on the brink of a second Chechan War; a state of emergency has just been declared in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, following the abduction and bloody beheading of four Western nationals. The European Union faces a crisis in governance: the scent of corruption can be detected in the halls of nascent institutions and voter interest in bloc-wide elections are at an all-time low. Germany is in the beginning of a political crisis. Rumors are circulating that several high ranking members of Germany’s ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have been receiving hidden donations into foreign bank accounts and the public are beginning to ask questions. To make matters worse, the process of reunification with East Germany, which began in 1991, has not gone as smoothly as everyone had hoped and the country is facing major financial difficulties, with four million Germans becoming unemployed (9.4% of the total population). This three-way JCC tackles these questions and more in this time of crisis.
