Endangered Coast

Endangered Coast Endangered Coast a nonprofit fostering the idea that empowering traditional cultures is essential to

We believe in the power of images to move people to do extraordinary things and that traditional cultures can teach us to help save our planet. We envision a polychromatic world where people and their governments recognize the importance of traditional societies. A world in where scientists and community leaders work together towards improving human well-being. Where traditional societies are rega

rded not as museum relics but storehouses of knowledge and practices that can help develop innovations that enhance the quality of human life, in ways that do not simultaneously destroy the environment. Finally, we envision a world where preservation of traditional knowledge and economic development is simultaneously achieved through activities that allow people to stay in their habitat and culture.

China’s largest fish market was shut down recently after COVID-19 was found on the surface of a chopping block of imported salmon. While the virus can affect aquatic mammals it’s unlikely that fish can spread the virus. However, it’s not impossible and that is a cause for concern.

For hundreds of years the women of Madagascar’s rural fishing communities had few economic choices, until a mystery stranger arrived. This is a charming short film about the empowerment of community and the women who live there against a backdrop of a fragile coastal ecosystem.

The film follows the life of Méline who works at 'Stitch' - a women’s embroidery co-operative based in the rural southeast of Madagascar.

"...when fishermen go out to sea, they come back with bags of sand but not a single fish. Hit hard by a decline in fishing - and out of options - fishermen are emptying their beaches and fishing grounds of sand, a self-inflicted death blow to their way of life."

Sand, add it to the list of endangered resources. Its high demand is bringing about something once considered unthinkable - its scarcity.

How do you put a value on local traditions, knowledge and know-how? We applaud the work of journalist Lucca Messer. Watch this short preview of his documentary of the Piaçaguera indigenous tribe who are under threat by Brazil's ultra conservative administration.

The genocide of the indigenous peoples of Brazil began when the Portuguese colonised the country back in the 1500s. Today, with ultra conservative policies put in…
