Chances for Children’s mission is to provide clinical group and dyadic services for families with young children to strengthen understanding, enhance sensitivity and nurture relationships. Chances for Children–NY is a 501(c)(3) that provides free parent-child play therapy and play groups in three neighborhoods in the Bronx—Highbridge, Hunts Point and Kingsbridge. Chances for Children-NY has create
d an evidence-based program that works with families to build on positive moments in their relationships with their children. These moments then become the foundation for stronger relationships that help children develop resilience and help families nurture warm relationships. The cornerstone of the Chances for Children-NY program is parent-child play therapy. In session, the parent and child play together while the parent and therapist collaborate as “babywatchers.” CFC sessions focus on moments of mutual pleasure and reflections on the communications hidden within play. Therapists provide parents with information about child development, discuss questions parents may have about their children’s behaviors, and help parents work through the inevitable bumps in the road of parenting. In parent-child playgroups, CFC provides parents with a safe space to play with their children, meet other parents in the neighborhood, talk about parenting challenges, explore solutions other parents have found helpful, and learn about their children’s development and each child’s unique personality and interests. Children are able to socialize with peers, as well as practice taking-turns, following routines and engaging in group activities. As part of our commitment to fostering a growing cadre of clinicians well-trained in early childhood emotional and behavioral health, CFC offer training at the Riverdale Mental Health Association in the North Bronx.
