In this week’s , we feature Grace Hill Turnbull (1880 – 1976)

Turnbull was a painter, sculptor, author, poet, and advocate for human rights and temperance. She collaborated with her architect brother, Bayard, to design her home in Baltimore, MD, the city of her birth. The house was completed in 1928, and Turnbull turned primarily to sculpture and writing from that time on. In 1966, Baltimore Junior College held a solo exhibition of her work, calling her the “Dean of Baltimore” sculptors. Her papers are at Syracuse University and a copy of her autobiography, Chips from my Chisel, is part of the NSS library.

In this week’s we feature Paul Fjelde (1892-1984).

In 1911, the Fjelde family moved from Minneapolis, MN to Valley City, ND where he enrolled at Valley City State. His sculpting abilities caught the attention of the school’s supervisor of art, Miss Mary G. Deem. Miss Deem encouraged Paul to move to Chicago and study under the sculptor Lorado Taft. After leaving Chicago, Paul continued to perfect his craft, studying at respected art schools in Minneapolis, New York, Copenhagen and Paris. In 1932, Paul joined the National Sculpture Society. He became the first editor of the NSS magazine, then called the National Sculpture Review.
