In this week’s , we feature Nathaniel Choate (1899 – 1965)

At Harvard University, Nathaniel Choate received his first serious art training from Edward Forbes, Paul Sachs, and Denman Ross. After his graduation in 1922, Choate went to Paris where his studied at the Colarossi and Delecluse Academies. His sculpture was influenced by travels to Italy, Spain, Greece, Morocco, Egypt and Sudan. Choate was an Academician of the National Academy of Design, Fellow and former Vice President of the National Sculpture Society and a member of the Century Club (all in New York City). Most of our current members will recognize his work, 'Alligator Bender,' at Brookgreen Gardens.

In this week’s , we feature Barbara Lekberg (1925-2018)

Barbara Lekberg was born in Portland, Oregon and grew up in the Middle West. She taught at the College of New Rochelle, the Philadelphia College of Art, Mt. Holyoke College, and the National Academy of Design. Her bronze and steel sculpture, often portraying the figure in motion, was widely exhibited.

“My work is about change: the soul in motion, getting from here to there; gesture as mirror of being – revelation, metamorphosis, resurrection, and going back to earth.” - Barbara Lekberg (exhibition brochure for the Sculpture Center April 1975)

This month, Richard MacDonald, FNSS, celebrates his 80th birthday. Elected to the National Sculpture Society in 1994, MacDonald advanced to Fellow membership only four years later.

"Over time, I stopped trying to imitate tradition and instead focused on expressing energy, tension, beauty, struggle and triumph through the figure itself. I wanted sculpture to feel alive - as though it could move at any moment." - Richard MacDonald (excerpt from upcoming Summer 2026 Sculpture Quarterly)

The National Sculpture Society is thankful to be one of four charities to accept donations in honor of this special milestone.
