Of Home, Family and Future

Of Home, Family and Future The Educational Mentoring Program (EMP) helps students from the foster care system achieve their goal of completing college.

Of Home, Family and Future is a non-profit organization formed to offer a different kind of assistance to domestic violence survivors and college-bound foster care youth. Many of these students drop out of college because they don’t feel comfortable in their environment, not because they’re intellectually unable to do the work. The EMP focuses on students who possess the strength of character and

intellectual tools to break the cycle of poverty, drugs and despair, but are often lost to society due to lack of appropriate support. In cooperation with partner agencies, this program provides vital support to enable these students to become college graduates and contributors to society. The Domestic Violence Initiative aims to provide comprehensive and long-term support to working women survivors of domestic violence and their children. Through this program, women are given access to the resources they need in order to rebuild strong and economically independent families, empowering them to make significant and lasting changes in their lives and those of their children.

Emma had this to say about the Transformation Squared Program - “It has been the light at the end of an incredibly dark period in my life. In my journey to survive domestic violence, I was re-victimized by the system, stigmatized by the ill-informed and marginalized. Today, I am working in a position I love, making a salary I couldn’t have imagined and my small family’s needs are met. This is one of the few programs that provides support while honoring humanity.”

OHFF is proud to announce that we are a 2026 Reisenbach Philanthropies grantee! In addition to the grant Reisenbach provided for food assistance, our EMP Program was awarded funding to help our students with dorm supplies, textbooks, tutoring, mental health resources and more. A heartfelt thank you to the Reisenbach team for providing much-needed support to facilitate our students’ college journeys.

Please help us congratulate Taylor, an EMP graduate who just completed her Bachelors degree in Psychology. Taylor graduated in December and is already gainfully employed in her field. She is also in the process of moving into her very first apartment, while she prepares to apply to graduate school. This young woman’s college journey was far from smooth, but her hard work and dedication carried her all the way to the finish line. Thank you, Taylor, for being an amazing example of what happens when we refuse to give up!

Please help us congratulate Cecily, a Transformation Squared graduate who recently completed her master’s degree at NYU, and is now a practicing psychotherapist! Cecily recently wrote our team and said, “the support I received from your program was instrumental in helping me reach this point, and I remain deeply grateful.” OHFF is so proud of all that Cecily has accomplished. She is such an inspiration to her two, amazing children and to OHFF’s staff!

While the holidays are a time of joy and togetherness, they can also bring increased stress for domestic violence survivors and their families. Financial pressures, heightened family expectations, and the emotional weight of the season can all intensify existing tensions. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please call The NYC Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-621-HOPE (4673), or in an emergency call 911.
The end of the government shutdown didn’t end the concerns for many of OHFF’s clients, who are constantly on the edge of food insecurity. As such, we are so grateful to Reisenbach Philanthropies for providing us with an emergency food assistance grant. Food is a basic necessity that no one should have to do without, and this assistance will go a long way in supporting our clients’ immediate needs and future aspirations.
Please help us wish our EMP Students well as they prepare to head back to campus for the start of the Spring semester. We hope everyone had a good and restful Winter break, and that they’re all ready for more late nighters, papers and educational breakthroughs. Special shout out to our soon to be graduating Seniors! May this be your best semester yet!
We are always in need of mentors to work one on one with our EMP students. If you or someone you know would make a great support system to an aspiring college student who has experienced foster care, please contact us at [email protected]

Many, many thanks to the University of Dayton's NY Metro Alumni chapter for hosting OHFF's annual Transformation Squared holiday party. Our clients and their children had an amazing time enjoying food, music, gifts and fun activities to kick off the holiday season.

The focus of the EMP has always been to empower youth who are experiencing foster care to graduate from 4-year colleges. That said, we are now broadening our support to include workforce development training, including personal coaching, resume prep,
interview skills workshops and internship support. We look forward to celebrating future graduations and offer letters with our students!
