A huge thank you to all our fundraisers, human and dog alike for supporting our FIRST EVER Paws Against Poaching campaign. You helped us exceed our goal and raised over $17,000!🐕

A special thank you to our Top Dog sponsor, HomeVets, for supporting our very first Paws Against Poaching campaign! 🐾 We are also incredibly grateful to Wagwear and BarkBox for donating amazing prizes for our lucky winners. Thank you all for your partnership and support in helping us make this campaign such a success!

Isn't nature just phenomenal!
If you look up while walking through the sand forest, you might catch a glimpse of an extraordinary puzzle.

The canopies of these ancient trees don’t clash or crowd each other out. Instead, they grow right up to the edge of their neighbors, leaving a network of narrow, deliberate gaps. It looks like a series of winding rivers or cracks in a mirror, etched directly into the sky.

In ecology, this beautiful boundary-setting is known as crown shyness.

This photograph was captured right here in our critically endangered—and now proudly protected—sand forest.

Why Do Trees Give Each Other Space?
While botanists are still uncovering the exact mechanisms, decades of research point to three main reasons why trees practice crown shyness:

- Physical abrasion: Wind causes adjacent branches to sway and collide, which mechanically breaks buds, leaves, and twigs.
- Light optimization: Some researchers suggest the light-sensing receptors cause the tree's growth to stunt when it detects shade from a neighboring tree, which avoids shading the lower canopy.
- Disease and pest restriction: The gaps serve as barriers that prevent the spread of harmful insects and fungal diseases.

Trees don't just compete; they adapt to coexist.

When we protect these forests we are protecting the complex, fragile architecture of the canopy and the millions of micro-ecosystems that thrive beneath its light. ❤️

We’ve expanded support for our Green Mamba families by helping provide JoJo water tanks, these will help households access reliable water storage during times of shortage 💧💚

You may have heard about our incredible Green Mambas — the dedicated women who work tirelessly to protect biodiversity and keep our reserve thriving. 🌿🐾

Wild Tomorrow recently helped install eight upcycled JoJo tanks for the Green Mambas, helping them take another important step toward building more sustainable homes for themselves and their families. 🏡✨

Conservation starts with community, and we’re proud to support the people who make this work possible every day. 🌍

Just 2 weeks to go until the official end of our first-ever Paws Against Poaching campaign! 🐾🌍

Don’t stop now — there’s still time for you and your pup to boost your fundraising totals and make an even bigger impact for wildlife. 🐕💚

Thanks to our incredible dog-loving community, we’ve already made amazing progress in raising funds to support anti-poaching K9 units in South Africa. But we’re not done yet!

These courageous dogs and handlers risk their lives every day to protect threatened wildlife—from rhinos and elephants to pangolins and countless other species, these K9 teams are helping ensure future generations can experience the beauty of the wild. 🦏🐘✨

No furry friend? No problem! You can still support these heroic K9 units by donating at the link in our bio or here: https://bit.ly/DonateK9s2026

P.S. Check out some of the amazing pups that are walking for wildlife in our campaign! 🐾🚶‍♂️🐕

In the thickest parts of the Zululand bush, where the heat is oppressive and the terrain is unforgiving, K9 units are the ultimate game-changer. 🛡️🐾

Why are K9s so successful? Because they possess a "biological technology" that humans simply cannot replicate.

- The Scent: A K9’s sense of smell is at least 10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than a human's. Their noses have up to 300 million olfactory receptors, compared to our mere 6 million, allowing them to "see" a trail through dense cover long after a human eye has lost the track.

- The Speed: They cover ground with an agility that no human can match, closing the gap much faster.

But this "elite advantage" comes at a cost. The working conditions in wilderness areas can be brutal. These teams operate in extreme dust, mud, and heat, often in the presence of dangerous animals like lion and buffalo. To stay in the fight, they require specialized training, nutrition, advanced veterinary care, and rugged gear that can withstand the African bush. 🌍🦁

We’ve extended our fundraiser because the frontline doesn't take a day off. Every donation ensures these dogs and their handlers have the resources to continue protecting the wild. 🦏💪

We’re so excited to welcome our newest Wild Tomorrow ambassador with a focus on Team Elephant, Michiko Hiranuma 🌍🐾

A longtime supporter, Michi’s journey with us makes this moment even more special. Originally from Japan and now based in NYC, she brings a global background across investment banking, startups, and financial markets. She currently works in Markets Innovation & Investments, helping drive innovation in electronic trading.

From growing up in Tokyo to finding connection with nature in the oceans of Hawaii, her passion for wildlife has grown into a commitment to protecting it.

In 2025, she joined us in South Africa for the Cape Town Marathon and a volunteer experience at the Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve—celebrating her honeymoon while witnessing conservation in action.

“It showed me that protecting wildlife is not just about animals; it’s about people and habitats working together.” -Michi

A proud Team Elephant alum, Michi continues to make her miles matter for wildlife 🐘

We’re so honored to have her in our community 💚
