Let´s find it and celebrate it. The German-American Steuben Parade has been a highlight in New York City's calendar of festivities for many years.

Steuben and Schurz, Bratwurst and Oktoberfest, Levi Strauss and Milton Hershey, Rockefeller and Kissinger, Charles Schulz and Dr. Seuss... German-American culture is everywhere. Founded by German clubs in Queens in the 1950s the Parade grew into the biggest and most colorful celebration of German heritage and culture in the world. The Parade's goal is to provide the American public in general and our civic leaders in particular with a reminder of the part played by German immigrants and their descendants in the development of the United States of America. As we celebrate our nation’s independence, we are reminded of the extraordinary contributions German immigrants made to the birth of America.

Thousands of Germans fought alongside the Continental Army during the American Revolution, helping secure the freedoms we cherish today. Among them was General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, whose leadership, discipline, and training transformed George Washington’s army at Valley Forge into a more effective fighting force. His military manual became the foundation for the United States Army for generations.

The commitment to German immigrants extended beyond the battlefield. Recognizing the large German-speaking population in the new nation, the U.S. Constitution was translated into German shortly after its ratification so German immigrants could read, understand, and embrace the principles upon which America was founded. It stands as a powerful reminder that German-Americans were an integral part of our country’s earliest history.

The German-American Steuben Parade proudly honors this shared heritage and the enduring bond between Germany and the United States. Thank you for your continued support in helping preserve and celebrate this important history for future generations.

PS- John Denver was an American singer-songwriter. While born in Roswell, New Mexico, he was of German and Irish descent. His birth name, Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., literally translates to “German village”.

The German tall ship Gorch Fock will be open for free public deck tours at Brooklyn Bridge Park (Pier 3) on July 6 and July 7, 2026.
