A new Opinion piece for the Queens Eagle stresses the importance of alternative-to-incarceration (ATI) programs that restore hope for New Yorkers caught up in the legal system while saving tax-payer dollars. Based on a cost-benefit analysis by John Jay's Data for Justice Collaboration, people served by the city's ATI Coalition providers avoided 267,121 days of incarceration and $131.9 million in jail and prison costs. That means New York tax-payers save $4.70 for every dollar spent on ATIs!
By addressing people's basic needs—housing, employment, mental health—ATIs get to the root of the city's most pressing social problems. And, as the data shows, they're more cost-effective too.
