For nearly twenty years, Larry Yee has been the heart and soul of the Yee Fung Toy Family Association, a fraternal organization in San Francisco’s iconic Chinatown. But to his daughter Lauren, a playwright living in New York, the association is an obsolete relic of a vanishing world. When Larry suddenly disappears, Lauren sets off on a wild quest to find him, embarking on a surreal, magical journey through the history and myths of her own lineage. KING OF THE YEES is a hilarious and heartfelt "kind of true" story by Signature resident artist Lauren Yee, who turns her incisive comedic eye on what we inherit and what it means to truly be a Yee.

CAATA Connects: University Gathering is an online space for university students to gather, connect, and build connections across the country. Attendees will have a chance to make connections with others studying similar disciplines and discuss topics impacting them as students. Join peers to chat about school, career thoughts, and engaging with the broader CAATA community!

CAATA Connects: Regional Gathering is an online space to connect with artists and community members in a different geographic region. Attendees will have a chance to make 1-1 connections and discuss topics of shared interest in larger breakout groups. Come make a new friend, exchange ideas, and explore potential collaborations for the future!

CAATA Connects bring together CAATA members to share work, resources, and ideas. These lightly facilitated spaces are designed for informal connection, reflection, and relationship-building across roles, regions, and identities. We are deeply grateful to the Middle Eastern North African Theater Makers Alliance (MENATMA) for supporting CAATA through the MENA Theater Makers Fund.

LOOKING BACK: MENATMA 2023 CONVENING

In 2023, more than 130 SWANA artists, activists, and scholars came together in San Francisco for MENATMA’s fourth annual Convening.

Held October 27–29 alongside Golden Thread Productions’ ReOrient Festival of Short Plays, the weekend created space for artists and cultural leaders from across the country to gather, connect, strategize, share resources, and celebrate the work of the SWANA theater community.

From community conversations and workshops to panels, artistic presentations, networking, and performances, the Convening reflected the power of gathering in person and building a national community rooted in solidarity and shared purpose.

We’re grateful to MENATMA for creating spaces where artists and organizations can come together not only to imagine what’s next, but to build it together.

And now, we’re looking forward to MENATMA’s 2026 Fall Convening, returning to San Francisco October 23–25, 2026.

We can’t wait to gather again!
