Applications Open | 10th International Training Workshop on Waste-to-Energy

How can developing countries accelerate the transition toward more sustainable, resource-efficient and low-carbon waste management systems?

One way is to learn directly from countries that have accumulated decades of experience and to connect that experience with local research, policy and implementation.

The 10th International Training Workshop on Waste-to-Energy will take place November 1–14, 2026, in Hangzhou, China, bringing together participants from developing countries for two weeks of intensive learning and international exchange.

The programme combines classroom learning with practical experience, including visits to state-of-the-art Waste-to-Energy plants, food-waste treatment facilities, research laboratories and innovation centers across the Hangzhou–Shanghai region.

Participation:
The workshop has no tuition fee. Organizers will cover accommodation, meals, local transportation and insurance in China. Participants are responsible for their international airfare.

Successful participants will receive an official certificate issued by China's Ministry of Science and Technology.

Who can apply?
Researchers, government officials, policymakers, engineers and industry professionals from developing countries who are actively working or conducting research in waste management, Waste-to-Energy, resource recovery, environmental protection or related fields.

♻️ The future of recycling will not be defined by labels — it will be defined by science.

The global conversation around plastics recycling is evolving rapidly. As new technologies emerge, one question becomes increasingly important:

How do we determine the right solution for each waste stream?

In the latest episode of The Energy Forum hosted by the Baker Institute’s Center for Energy Studies, Prof. Marco J. Castaldi, Professor at City College of New York, Head of WtERT USA, and Vice President of WtERT, joined leading experts to discuss:

🎙️ “From Mechanical to Molecular: What ‘Advanced Recycling’ Actually Means”

The discussion explored the differences between mechanical recycling and molecular-level recycling approaches, highlighting the importance of moving beyond simplified narratives and evaluating technologies through:

🔹 Scientific evidence
🔹 Lifecycle performance
🔹 Material characteristics
🔹 Environmental impacts
🔹 Resource recovery potential

Prof. Castaldi emphasized that sustainable waste management requires an integrated approach. Mechanical recycling, advanced recycling, energy recovery, and other resource recovery solutions each have a role depending on the specific challenges of each waste stream.

Prof. Jianhua Yan, Chairman of WtERT, participated in the 17th World Economic Forum Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2026 (Summer Davos) in Dalian from 23 to 25 June, 2026.

He joined high-level discussions on “Working with Global Partners to Promote Low-Carbon Transformation” and “Artificial Intelligence and Future Growth,” exchanging insights with government, academic, and industry leaders on clean energy policies, technology pathways, and future innovation.

The sessions included global leaders such as Liu Zhenmin, China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change Affairs, and Noam Boussidan, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum. Prof. Yan also met with Roberto Bocca, Director of the WEF Energy and Materials Center, to discuss cooperation opportunities in clean energy.

WtERT, in collaboration with Zhejiang University and Columbia Climate School's Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management (SPM), recently convened an academic exchange in Hangzhou focused on Waste-to-Energy development in the United States and China.
The discussions highlighted key contrasts and complementarities: lessons from the mature WtE ecosystem in China, current challenges in the U.S., and shared perspectives on developing cost-effective and scalable solutions for the Global South.

The city of , recognized by the UN Environment Programme/ UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) as a leading “Zero Waste City”, demonstrates outstanding performance, with up to 98% of waste valorized through advanced systems and digital innovation, including AI-driven management.

The exchange was directly connected to real-world implementation through a visit to one of Asia’s largest WtE facilities (over 5,000 tons/day capacity), showcasing high-performance design, operational efficiency, AI-driven operations, and the integration of waste management into a circular urban system.

This unique combination of academic exchange and industrial experience highlights how cities like are leading the transition from waste challenges to resource recovery at scale.

This exchange marks a strong step forward in international cooperation and knowledge sharing for sustainable waste management.

We are proud to share outstanding news from our global network!

Prof. Alex Godoy-Faúndez, Chair of WtERT Chile hosted at Centro de Investigación en Sustentabilidad y Gestión Estratégica de Recursos at
Universidad del Desarrollo, has been appointed Scientific Advisor to the Chair’s team of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on Plastic Pollution, convened by UN Environment Programme.

This important role contributes to the development of a future legally binding global treaty on plastic pollution, one of the most critical environmental negotiations shaping the future of materials, sustainability, and global governance.

Prof. Godoy’s work has been widely recognized for advancing Waste-to-Value approaches, with a strong focus on circular economy models for bio-resources and electronic waste, developed in close collaboration with recyclers and industry stakeholders. His research emphasizes resource efficiency, material recovery, and the integration of science into practical, scalable solutions.

His appointment reflects a broader commitment to bridging science, industry, and policy, contributing to international efforts through organizations such as the International Science Council and International Organization for Standardization, as well as global assessments including Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.

This appointment highlights the importance of science-driven circular solutions in addressing plastic pollution at a global scale.
