Human services workers at University Settlement Society of New York help New Yorkers live and learn in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. Although they are essential to the fabric of our communities, the State doesn’t show them the same care in their paychecks. 💵

Governor Kathy Hochul - Mark and all human services workers deserve livable wages. This year, a 4% investment is the minimum that programs need to help wages keep up with inflation.

We join so many across our community in mourning the loss of Fred Shack, former CEO of Urban Pathways and a close friend, trusted partner, and fierce advocate.

As a member of HSC’s leadership for several years, Fred had an unwavering commitment to serving not only those who walked through the doors of Urban Pathways, but the entire human services sector. He drove the creation of the Campaign, throwing all his might behind our collective efforts to pay human services workers the wages he knew they deserved. He also served on several advisory boards, showing us all how to navigate the inside and outside, while remaining steadfast in our values.

Our advocacy is stronger because of Fred’s passion and expertise. He was, and is, the best of what our sector has to offer to those who need us most.

Our heart goes out to Fred, his family, and the team at Urban Pathways. We know Fred’s inspirational legacy will continue to shine through all the lives he has touched across our sector and communities.

No excuses Governor Kathy Hochul! When people do essential work, they deserve to be paid fairly.

A 4% investment for all human services programs is the least our sector deserves to help wages keep up with inflation.

“She’s calling this her affordability budget and she’s not even paying her own bills.”

There’s no safety net without human services nonprofits and there’s no affordable NY without for their workers.

Governor Kathy Hochul — we need a 4% investment for ALL State human services programs now!

Learn about our demands:

The governor, Senate, and Assembly all have different ideas for how to implement this year’s increases for human services contracts.

“DON’T WALK OVER US.”

Today in Albany, we filled the Million Dollar Staircase with THOUSANDS of handwritten postcards from human services workers telling it’s time for !

From HSC’s Executive Director Michelle Jackson:

“When funding falls short of inflation, it’s a pay cut in disguise. Every percentage point the state withholds is food off the table for a worker and a vacancy at an essential program. Today’s delivery of thousands of postcards sends a clear message to the Governor: human services workers will not be overlooked. We are demanding fair funding that actually keeps pace with the cost of living.”

This is what real partnership looks like! 🤝

This week, HSC held our reception for human services leaders welcoming new members of the Mamdani administration. We heard directly from Deputy Mayor for Health & Human Services Dr. Helen Arteaga PhD, Deputy Mayor for Operations Julia Kerson, and Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning Leila Bozorg about their visions for strengthening the sector.

We look forward to working with our new City partners to ensure equitable and timely payment for nonprofits, and for their workers! đź’Ş
