⭐️Today, we’re sharing the story of golden senior Shades.
At 10 years old, Shades never expected to lose the only home she knew, but that was what happened when her owners moved and dumped her at a Texas shelter. Facing overcrowding and forced to make impossible decisions, shelter volunteers reached out to us to save her life. We immediately said YES - not only to her but to the two brothers she was surrendered with!
When Shades arrived at her foster home, we realized something was very wrong. She was overweight to the point of looking pregnant, painfully arthritic, and seemed to have an unquenchable thirst. After various tests, we discovered that she has Cushing’s disease - a hormonal condition in dogs that causes chronically excessive cortisol production. If left untreated, it can progressively lead to life-threatening complications such as high blood pressure, diabetes, dangerous blood clots, pancreatitis, and severe immune suppression.
With medical management, Shades is feeling much better and her symptoms have been brought to heel. With diagnostics, continued monitoring and medications, Shades’ rescue cost has accumulated to nearly $3,000 and continues to rise.
