Girls in Civil (GIC) started in the Civil Engineering and Surveying Department at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez Campus. In December 2019, we made it official with our first meeting. And after that, we have been growing to reach more people on and off of our campus.

Did you know Florence Kelley was a powerful advocate for safer working conditions and a pioneer in labor reform? 👀

As Illinois’s first female chief factory inspector, she fought against child labor, unsafe factory environments, and excessive working hours, helping shape labor standards during a period of rapid industrial growth. Her work highlights the importance of fair labor standards, gender equity and human rights ✨

Career paths in civil engineering are rarely linear and that’s okay. 🛣️

Career mapping is the process of understanding where you are, exploring where you want to go, and identifying the experiences, skills, and opportunities that can help you get there along the way. 👷‍♀️📍

From internships and field work to networking, certifications, leadership, and discovering different disciplines within civil engineering, every experience can help shape your path. 📚🏗️

Your first role does not define your entire career. Growth can look different for everyone. 🌱

What part of civil engineering are you currently exploring or interested in? ⬇️

To every girl in engineering, school, internships, office, field work, late nights, and self doubt… you belong here more than you think 🤍

Keep showing up, keep learning, keep taking up space. one day you’ll look back and realize you were capable all along.✨

Engineering can be rewarding, exciting, creative, challenging… but it can also feel overwhelming sometimes. 🧠🏗️

And honestly, not enough people talk about that part.

A lot of us are balancing deadlines, studying, fieldwork, meetings, constant learning, career pressure, uncertainty, and life outside of work all at the same time. Sometimes work gets so busy that we do not even stop long enough to recognize how mentally exhausting things can feel.

Whether you are a student, starting your career, changing jobs, learning a new role, preparing for licensure, or simply trying to keep up with everything going on around you… you are probably not the only one feeling this way. 🤍

Many engineers quietly experience stress, burnout, self-doubt, or imposter syndrome at different points in their careers, even if nobody around them says it out loud.

We wanted to make this post as a reminder that:
• you are still learning
• asking questions is normal
• support systems matter
• rest matters too
• and nobody has everything figured out immediately

Sometimes just talking about these things openly can help someone feel a little less alone in the process. 👷‍♀️✨

What has helped you most when feeling overwhelmed in engineering?

✅ Passed your FE, secured a job, and ready for what’s next?

Our second post in the Continuing Education Series is all about earning your Professional Engineer (PE) License by taking the exam and gaining 4 years of work experience.

Stay tuned as we continue this series exploring different paths in engineering!

📝 Have you taken the PE? Tell us your tips in the comments below.

Did you know Emily Warren Roebling was the first woman field engineer in an American project? 👀

She taught herself engineering and helped build the Brooklyn Bridge in New York after her husband suddenly fell ill. Her presence and technical input helped keep the bridge construction on schedule and ensured the integrity of the bridge’s design and construction.

Happy Mother’s Day! 🧡👷‍♀️

Today got us thinking about the many ways mothers continue showing up in civil engineering and construction, often balancing far more behind the scenes than people realize.

From jobsites and deadlines to caregiving, routines, and emotional support, so much of their work happens quietly and without recognition.

Here’s a small post sharing a few ways we can better support mothers in the industry, not just today, but throughout their careers.

Do you know other ways we could support mothers in engineering and construction? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Studying for engineering tests is not just about memorizing. It’s about learning how to think! 🧠🧐

Here are 5 ways to study that go beyond the usual advice. Not just for your next test or finals, but for the long run.

Because the goal isn’t just to pass.
It’s to actually understand what you’re doing. 🙇‍♀️📚

If you’re in the middle of tests or getting ready for finals, this is for you.

What’s one study method that actually works for you? 💭

A lot of people start civil engineering thinking there’s only one path.

Design. Calculations. Office. Field. Done. 👩‍💻

But the reality is very different.

Civil engineering opens the door to multiple directions. You can go into field work, management, planning, policy, research, or even build something of your own. And many of these paths are not always talked about in school. 👀

If you’re just starting out or even a few years in and feel unsure about where you fit, that doesn’t mean you chose the wrong career. It usually means you just haven’t been exposed to all the options yet.

Career mapping in civil engineering is not linear. It is something you build over time as you learn what you enjoy, what you’re good at, and what kind of impact you want to have.

This is just a reminder that there is space to explore within the field. You are not limited to one version of what a civil engineer looks like.

🧡 Save this for later, or share it with someone who might need it.

We’ve been loving this trend and seeing everyone share their stories.

A little late, but we had to join in. 🤭

This is just a small part of Girls in Civil, and a reminder that everything starts somewhere.

This is who grew up not knowing exactly where this path would lead.

This is who reminds us that representation starts early.

Before the careers and the projects, there were moments like these. Moments of curiosity, of figuring things out, of slowly finding your place.

This is why we do what we do.

This is who we are building this for.

For every woman in civil engineering and construction finding her place.

You belong here. 🧡
