👋 It’s back this Fall! The Moving Architects Community Dance Workshop - return to your love of dance and performance.

This Community Dance Workshop is for adults who want an opportunity to dance and perform again! Designed for women of all ages, this program welcomes individuals who have a dance foundation from experiences dancing in high school, college, and/or professionally.

🤝Through a 4-week series, we will create community, rehearse, and dance together, culminating in a community dance performance. Come as you are!

Workshops:
Sundays, Oct 11, 18, 25 & Nov 1 @ 1:45pm-3:45pm
Friends & Family Performance Showing: Nov 1 @ 4pm
Location: Yoga Mechanics, Montclair, NJ

Workshop Format includes:

1️⃣Community Conversation: Discuss the day’s movement qualities and patterns and how they translate and show up in your dancing and your life.

2️⃣Somatic Warm-Up: Arrive in your body and deepen awareness through guided somatic movement practices.

3️⃣Choreography & Performance: Learn, embody, and perform choreography together.

✨We’re excited and grateful to be selected for an ARTS 14C Special Project Residency this fall in Jersey City! ARTS 14C

This residency marks the beginning of a new interdisciplinary collaboration with visual artist Mary Blackstock Mary Blackstock | MPB CREATIVE, and we’re thrilled to join the vibrant community of artists at 14C as we begin developing this new work.

Just off two rich days together resetting past work (our ‘60s-inspired mashup The New Jam coming soon 💃) while continuing to dig into a new short work inspired by Prince Edward Island and the writings of L.M. Montgomery. 🌾

Immense gratitude to Meg Regan and Meg Regan for so generously having and hosting us on these beautiful summer days. ☀️

🌩️ Rehearsals continue for our latest short work - this time accompanied by a midday downpour with startling thunder and lightning flashes that brought the nature themes a little closer. Working through spatial patterns, overall structure, & bluegrass music.🎻

🤝Rehearsal moments from our newest short work inspired by the beauty of the fields and landscapes of Prince Edward Island, the rich language used to describe them in the novels of L. M. Montgomery, and the female friendships and sense of community elevated in her work.

✨✨What an amazing and incredibly meaningful evening sharing the film screening of Where She Once Stood: The Women of the Crane House & Historic YWCA Alive Through Dance! ✨✨

A heartfelt THANK YOU to our dynamic panel participants for bringing such passion, knowledge, and care to the discussion: moderator Gigi Naglak of NJ Council for the Humanities .humanities, Angelica Diggs of Montclair History Center , Erin Carlisle Norton of The Moving Architects, and TMA company dancers Emily Cicio and Mariah Anton-Arters .

We are also deeply grateful to our insightful and responsive audience for your thoughtful questions, enthusiasm, and the wonderful conversations that continued after the screening. Thank you as well to Mariah for her solo and the TMA board and Montclair Film staff who made it all run smoothly. 💛

🗣️The evening sparked so many inspiring conversations about how this kind of interdisciplinary, site-responsive work can continue to live and evolve within historic spaces. Whether through live performance or beautifully captured on film, when artists, historians, and communities come together, meaningful things happen for those creating the work and those experiencing it.

The Moving Architects present a special dance film event screening of Where She Once Stood: The Women of the Crane House & Historic YWCA Alive Through Dance.

Created in partnership with the Montclair History Center,
and originally presented as a live, site-immersive dance performance on site with eight sold-out shows, the film experience brings the work into focus in new ways. The evening event includes a short live dance performance with , the screening, and a panel discussion that offers insight into the creative process and the documented history behind the site.

✨✨✨The Moving Architects present a special dance film event screening of Where She Once Stood: The Women of the Crane House & Historic YWCA Alive Through Dance.

Created in partnership with the Montclair History Center, the work transforms the Crane House & Historic YWCA into a living historical site where movement and music make visible women’s lives including that of the Crane family, the enslaved women and domestic workers who were part of the household, and the Black women, girls, and boarders connected to the building during its time as a segregated YWCA.

Originally presented as a live, site-immersive dance performance on site with eight sold-out shows, and beautifully featured on PBS/State of the Arts, the project is now translated to film.

🎥 The film experience brings the work into focus in new ways, with the evening event including a short live dance performance, the screening, and a panel discussion that offers insight into the creative process and the documented history behind the site.
