MSP 197: Making Dance Performance ‘Fun’ with David Parker

🌟In this episode of Movers & Shapers, we welcome the founder of the Bang Group, David Parker, to talk about his incredible career and how his life and dancing are entwined.

🎥Tuning in, you’ll hear all about David’s life, how a film about the Golden Age of entertainment sparked his love for dance, the training he received, and so much more! David tells us all about his time in New York, his love for tap dancing, and what it was like to experience ‘the Dance Boom’.

🪩We delve into his decision to start choreographing later in life and how his sexual awakening informed his work before discussing how he combined dancing and acting in his choreography. David goes on to tell us about how choreography became his passion and why he still sees the importance of being able to dance when he wants to, even in his 60s.

🎙️We even talk about some of the challenges he’s faced in his career and touch on some of the highlights of his career. Finally, our guest tells us what he is working on now. To hear all this, and so much more, be sure to press play now!

✨Beginning rehearsals for a new short dance project inspired by the beauty of the fields and landscapes of Prince Edward Island and the rich language used to describe them in the novels of L. M. Montgomery.

Phrases like:
“rippling under winds soft as silk”
“a glistening white world”
“the whistle of wind in the treetops”

and movement shaping early ideas that:
“twirls through the orchard”
“swoop down”

There’s also a bit of inspiration coming from ice-dancing - its sweeping glides, turns, and partnering, which echos the same sense of wind, flow, and shimmer found in Montgomery’s words.

Early making, but a beautiful place to begin. With ✨

🌏Cheers to International Women’s Day! A global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.🌎

🌟We celebrate women dance artists who make an impact in the world as doers, thinkers, movers, and shapers. As a dance company that focused on feminist narratives and ideologies, our work embodies current and historically lived approaches to the female experience. With a fiercely feminist twist, this photo says it all.🌟

Finishing up workshop two of The Moving Architects Community Dance Workshop, feeling light, tired, sweaty, and with the dancer high. A wonderful group of women embracing and taking in all that dance can be, inspiring to behold! 💛

Sometimes you walk into a big, open space… and all you want to do is run into it. To stretch. To turn. To take it in with your whole body. 💛

Even if it’s been a year. Or years. Even if life feels very full. Even if you haven’t danced in a while.

The Moving Architects Community Dance Workshop is a space for the part of you that misses the studio, the camaraderie, the creativity, the practice, the process.

This isn’t about pushing, proving, or performing perfectly. It’s about gathering. Moving. Remembering. Laughing. Sweating a little. Being in process with other adults who love dance.

Over four Sundays, we’ll learn and rehearse together with intention, culminating in a community showing that reflects who we are now.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to come back to dance… this might be it. ✨

Sometimes the music starts and your body still knows what to do. 💛

Even if it’s been a year. Or years.
Even if life is very full.
Even if you’re not “in dance shape.”

The Moving Architects Community Dance Workshop is a space for that part of you that misses the studio, the camaraderie, the feeling of creating something together.

This isn’t about pushing, proving, or performing perfectly. It’s about gathering. Moving. Remembering. Laughing. Sweating a little. Being in process with other adults who love dance.

Over four Sundays, we’ll learn movement and rehearse, moving together intentionally. We’ll share stories, explore movement, and end with a heartfelt showing that reflects who we are now.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to come back to dance… this might be it. ✨

👉You don’t stop being a dancer just because life gets busy.

The Moving Architects Community Dance Workshop is for the part of you that still remembers how it felt to rehearse, to move with others, and to create community through dance. It’s for anyone who danced and misses the joy, rigor, and connection of dancing together.

This isn’t about “getting back in shape” or proving anything, but about being in your body and reconnecting with your dancing self.

Over four Sundays, we gather to talk, move, rehearse, laugh, reflect, and build a piece together. We end not with perfection, but with authenticity: a shared performance that honors where you’ve been and where you are now.

✨ This is your invitation back into the room.
