Targeting journalists is a decades old strategy used to censor the press. One that was used in un-democratic countries is now flagrantly used in democratic states and has spread like wildfire. And when that happens it’s not only bad for journalists, it’s bad for democracy, it’s bad for the public and it’s the worst for the most vulnerable people in society.

Today marks 5 years since Shireen Abu Akleh was killed while doing her job. CFWIJ and WPF honor the memory of Shireen, veteran Aljazeera Palestinian-American who covered the Middle East since 1997.
On this day three years ago, Shireen was fatally shot by Israeli forces while reporting on a raid by the Israel Defense Forces in the occupied West Bank.
Widely known as “the voice of Palestine,” the slain journalist was celebrated for her fearless journalism that brought global attention to the harsh realities of the conflict.
Deeply admired, her legacy, both in life and in death, continues to inspire others in the pursuit of truth and justice.

It cannot be stated enough how complicated this moment is for press freedom in the United States today. On the morning of 25 April 2026, we were part of (only) six organizations and our founding Director Kiran Nazish, one of 507 signatories, to send a petition that pleaded the WHCA to ensure a forceful demonstration of opposition with President Trumps administration and its attacks on journalists. Our ONLY goal in joining this petition was to raise our voice and concerns about the threats journalists face in the US today. The horrifying events of the night magnify the presence and realness of these threats. While the US President is center of this story at the moment, we would like to highlight this was an event of the PRESS and its purpose was to celebrate the first amendment. Our core concerns are with making sure this event is transparently investigated and all measures are taken place that such incidents do not occur again. These are preventable events. Meanwhile, we extend our solidarity and support to all journalists and others among the 2600 attendees.

Janine Di Giovanni’s work stands as a reminder of what journalism is meant to be at its bravest and most human. As a war correspondent who has spent decades documenting conflict and its aftermath, Janine Di Giovanni has consistently centered the voices of civilians, survivors, and communities living through the world’s most difficult moments. Her reporting does more than chronicle events. It preserves memory, demands accountability, and insists that human suffering is never ignored or forgotten. We are sharing this quote to honor her unwavering commitment to truth, empathy, and the power of witnessing.

Our team has been closely monitoring Shelly Kittleson’s case and after spending hours this morning following sources and confirmations we have received confirmation from several sources that she has been released by the militia group. We have heard from Iraqi PMs source that she is now under custody of the Iraqi authorities and we are awaiting confirmation from US sources. In the meantime, we welcome the release and we look forward for Shelly to be free to go home.
