Our Executive Director Dr. Mark Chatarpal joined ’s legislative breakfast and panel on food access and affordability in New York City, in partnership with , featuring a keynote . He addressed the scope of food insecurity and lack of food affordability across the city, including among college students, and spoke to the importance of local food procurement for the new municipal grocery stores and of culturally relevant food assistance. He also discussed the impact of the recent HR1 changes to SNAP work requirements and eligibility, and how emerging food voucher programs help make food more accessible for immigrant New Yorkers who are no longer eligible for federal assistance.

Thank you to moderator (City & State New York) and fellow panelists Council Member , Leslie Gordon (Food Bank For NYC), Thomas McNeil (), and Taina Rodriguez () for such a thoughtful conversation. We’re grateful to be working alongside such dedicated partners to build a city where every New Yorker can access affordable, nourishing, culturally relevant food with dignity.

Singapore’s hawker centres were the first Intangible Cultural Heritage recognized by UNESCO in 2020, yet hawkers face looming erasure. Are Singapore’s preservation policies the very thing responsible for hawker centres’ uncertain future?

In our first freelance article for the NYC Food Policy Center, chef and researcher draws on two years of fieldwork conducted in Singapore under a Fulbright-National Geographic fellowship to outline the ongoing contradictions within the country’s hawker centre regulations.

On Friday we co-hosted our second working session on values-aligned local food procurement with and Collective Justice Consulting LLC. Local and regional stakeholders, including farmstand operators, co-ops, community distributors, and farmers, came together in person and over Zoom to discuss how the city can build a procurement framework that can support more local and regional food supply, especially from BIPOC farmers and producers, to flow into communities — and potentially onto the shelves of NYC’s forthcoming public grocery stores. Excited for the conversations ahead.
