Do you know how Hakka people celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival?
Beyond the familiar mooncakes and moon-gazing, we cherish special customs like “moon gazing while killing the pomelo” to pray for safety and “cherish the moonlight” to ward off evil🌕
The “five-nut mooncake” symbolizes abundant harvest and wonderful life🥮
In some Hakka regions, we have the tradition of singing folklores and engaging in friendly song duels, making “half August” even more festive🎵

What a day at Passport to Taiwan 2026☔

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth on May 24. Despite the nonstop rain (seriously, it was pouring!), so many of you came out to celebrate Taiwanese culture with us.

We loved sharing Hakka culture through our hands-on Lei Cha experience and seeing so many people give it a try. We hope you enjoyed making your own Lei Cha and learning a little more about this unique Hakka tradition!

Rain or shine, seeing the community come together always makes the day special. Thank you for your support, your smiles, and your enthusiasm. We can't wait to see you again at our next event!

🏮Happy Lantern Festival🏮
Lantern Festival is an important traditional celebration for Hakka people. In addition to eating tangyuan, carrying lanterns, and solving riddles, unique customs make this festival special!

Do you know? Instead of tangyuan, Hakka families prepare vegetable-filled rice cakes (菜包) as offerings to deities and ancestors for blessings. Newlyweds also bring lanterns to temples to pray for children, a tradition called "Qiú dīng xiàn dēng" (求丁獻燈), symbolizing prosperity and family growth.

Another fascinating tradition is "borrowing money for wealth" and "borrowing mandarins for sweetness." Worshippers symbolically borrow small amounts of money and mandarins from the temple, believing it will bring financial prosperity and harmony in the coming year—on the condition that they return it with interest at the following Lantern Festival.

These customs carry the wisdom of Hakka heritage, making the celebration even more meaningful!

元宵節是客家人傳統的重要節日，除了吃元宵、提燈籠、猜燈謎，還有獨特的習俗！

你知道嗎？客家人會以菜包代替元宵來祭拜土地公與祖先，象徵祈福納吉。此外，新婚夫妻會帶燈籠至廟宇祈求添丁，寓意「求丁獻燈」，希望家庭興旺。還有「借錢求財」與「借柑求甘」的傳統，向土地公廟象徵性地借取金錢與柑橘，祈求來年財運亨通、家人甜蜜和睦，並在來年元宵節時加倍奉還。

這些傳統習俗承載著客家人的文化智慧，也讓節日增添更多意義✨
