When scientists come together great things happen! 50 of our past and present grantees from the last 30 years came together for an impressive day of science last week at our Research Symposium. We left with so much hope and gratitude for the work they do every day to improve the quality of life of patients, find new treatments options and ultimately cures for blood cancers. Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation’s Medical Advisory Board has nurtured a stellar group of brilliant young investigators and symposiums like this one give them the opportunity to not only hear incredible research updates but also to form valuable connections and collaborations! This event left us so inspired and we are grateful to all our donors whose generosity allows us to support this critical work.

We are thrilled to highlight one of our newest grantees Dr. Robert Bowman from the University of Pennsylvania.

When asked how this grant will impact his work, Dr. Bowman shared, “This grant will enable my lab to pursue the idea that cellular changes in early stage of cancer development, termed “clonal hematopoiesis”, can imprint themselves on leukemia development years down the line. We will use cutting edge methods to track cancer cell “lineages” in order to construct cellular ancestries. These lineages will allow us to identify the roots of cancer development, identifying precise points where cells can be intercepted before they become cancer.”

“The ultimate goal of this work is to ensure that every patient has access to treatments that work for them. Achieving this goal requires a relentless commitment to understanding every aspect of cancer biology so that therapies can be tailored to each individual’s disease”

Please join us in congratulating one of our newest grantees, Simone Minnie, PhD, from University of California, San Francisco!

Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation funds the best and brightest early-career scientists dedicated to finding cures for blood cancers. When asked how this grant will impact her work, Dr. Minnie shared, “This grant will enable me to continue building my lab at UCSF, and the resulting research, which aims to target resistance to CAR T-cell therapy, will hopefully provide an additional immunotherapy option for patients with hematologic malignancies.”

Dr. Minnie’s commitment to cancer research is also personal. Having seen the effects of cancer on both her mother and sister, she is driven to develop better treatments and, ultimately, cures for patients and families facing these diseases.
