We talk a lot about equity, inclusion, and representation but too often, those words are used without the depth they demand.

The hard truth is, many organizations have changed their optics, not their operating systems.

They've added "diverse voices," but not shifted decision-making power.
They've issued statements, but not examined their structures.
They've focused on visibility, not sovereignty.

So let’s ask...

→ Are the people at the table shaping the agenda or just decorating it?
→ Are your DEI efforts redistributing power or reinforcing comfort?
→ Are you rooting your strategy in justice or just reacting to optics?

Equity isn’t about being seen but rather heard, resourced, and empowered.

If your systems aren’t changing, your culture isn’t either.

This is about transformation.

And transformation starts with asking, who holds the power and why?

Where are the legacy operators?

Let’s talk about the people who built the cannabis industry long before it was legal.

Legacy growers, community caregivers, underground distributors -- often Black, Brown, and deeply rooted in their communities.

Now that the industry is regulated, those same people are being policed, priced out and pushed aside.

If social equity doesn’t center legacy voices, it isn’t equity, it’s erasure.

At Cannabis Impact Fund, we’ve seen how good intentions without accountability can still produce harm. And we say this with love and urgency.

💥 Representation without accountability is performative.
💥 DEI without power-sharing is decoration.
💥 Equity without policy is a broken promise.

“Awareness” is not enough. “Learning” is not the same as doing. And making space isn’t the same as giving power.

If your DEI efforts aren’t reshaping your systems, your strategy isn’t equitable.

The War on Dr*gs disproportionately impacted marginalized communities, leading to generations of economic and social harm. C*nn*bis social equity programs are a step toward repairing those injustices and building a more inclusive industry.

✊🏾Righting Wrongs: These programs help individuals and communities affected by harsh dr*g policies find new opportunities in the legal space.
✊🏾Economic Empowerment: By providing funding, training, and resources, social equity programs open doors for minority-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.
✊🏾Breaking Barriers: Reduced licensing fees and priority processing help level the playing field for those who’ve historically been excluded.
✊🏾 Building Communities: Equity initiatives reinvest in neighborhoods hit hardest by the War on Dr*gs, fostering economic growth and social support.

From the restrictive days of the M*rijuana Tax Act in the 1930s to the progress of federal h**p legalization in 2018, the journey of c*nn*bis reform is deeply tied to social justice.

⚖️ 1970s: War on Drugs escalates, disproportionately impacting communities of color.
🌿 1996: California legalizes medical c*nn*bis, sparking a nationwide movement.
🚀 2012: Colorado & Washington legalize recreational c*nn*bis, paving the way for broader reform.
🤝 2020s: Social equity programs and expungements fight the harms of prohibition.

This history reminds us why advocacy matters. Progress is possible when we work together.

Huge news for veterans and c*nn*bis research! After years of debate, the FDA has approved a groundbreaking clinical trial to explore c*nn*bis as a treatment for PTSD in veterans.

The study, known as MJP2, will span multiple states and include over 300 participants, marking a critical step toward understanding c*nn*bis’s potential to support those who’ve served.

This is progress in action.💡

Jesce Horton is redefining what it means to lead in the c*nn*bis industry. As the co-founder and CEO of LOWD, he’s setting the standard for premium, sustainable cultivation, proving that quality and responsibility can go hand in hand.

But Jesce’s work goes far beyond the grow room. He co-founded the Minority C*nn*bis Business Association with his wife to empower communities impacted by the War on Drugs. Through the NuLeaf Project, he’s providing funding, resources, and opportunities for minority-owned c*nn*bis businesses to thrive.

From shaping policy to educating the industry on diversity and inclusion, Jesce is a driving force for equity and excellence in c*nn*bis.✊🏾
