Thousands of Jews in Ethiopia are still waiting to reunite with their families in Israel. 🇮🇱

Struggle to Save Ethiopian Jewry works on the ground in Gondar and Addis Ababa to support this community while they wait.

Through our medical clinic, we have helped reduce child mortality to almost zero. Our team treats acute malnutrition, supports children experiencing stunting, and provides ongoing care to families who would otherwise have no access to consistent healthcare.

But our work goes beyond healthcare.

We run schools, provide daily meals, and ensure that thousands of people can continue living a Jewish life with dignity while they wait for the chance to reunite with loved ones in Israel.

This is not short-term aid. It is long-term, consistent support for a community that has been waiting for years.

Every post, every share, and every voice helps bring attention to a story that too many people still don’t know. 💙

Our founder sat with the medical team at SSEJ’s clinic, listening to the realities they face every day. 🩺

They spoke about the challenges of acute malnutrition and stunting, and the progress being made through consistent care and early intervention.

We were pleased to hear that stunting rates are falling and child mortality has been to almost zero.

This is what community-based healthcare looks like. Steady, committed, and life-changing. 🤍

SSEJ volunteer Rabbi Avraham Wein reflects on Ethiopian Jewry through the lens of “the bread of affliction”, not as symbolism, but as lived reality.

As we approach Passover, the question is simple: what does freedom mean when families are still waiting to be reunited?

A journey to Ethiopia uncovers the fragile remnants of a once-isolated Jewish community and the quiet heroism sustaining it today. Through the lens of handmade matzah and a massive communal seder, Avraham Wein reflects on faith, poverty, and longing—where “the bread of affliction” becomes a li...

Last week, our founder Jeremy Feit spoke at Yeshiva University as part of the Lieberman-Mitzner Center’s “In Dialogue With” series.

He shared the story of the Jewish community in Ethiopia, the challenges many still face, and the ongoing work to support those waiting to make aliyah. These conversations matter in helping more people understand both the urgency of the situation and the strength of this community.

Thank you to Yeshiva University and the Lieberman-Mitzner Center for hosting, and to everyone who joined us. 💙

SSEJ volunteer Victoria Feder recently travelled to Ethiopia to see our work in Gondar firsthand. 🇪🇹

Reflecting on her visit, she shared:
“The trip to Ethiopia was more powerful and meaningful than I expected. I initially arrived with some skepticism, but after spending 48 hours with the leadership, teachers, and children, I am deeply moved by their commitment to their Jewish legacy.”

During her time there, Victoria joined the community in prayer, speaking Hebrew with community members and praying Mincha in both Amharic and Hebrew alongside hundreds of people.

“We learned how individuals maintained their Jewish identities in remote villages through Shabbat observance and constant study of the Tanach.”

One moment that stayed with her:
“Seeing members bring photos of their family members currently living in Israel made their passion for Aliyah incredibly obvious.”

As Passover approaches, her reflection is especially powerful:
“The resemblance between this community and the Jews in Egypt is not lost on me. I hope that, like their forebears, this community soon finds its way to the Land of Israel.”

This is the reality for thousands still waiting in Gondar. ✡️

In a small workshop in Ethiopia, tradition is woven thread by thread. 🪡

Here, skilled artisans handcraft tallitot using techniques passed down through generations. Each strand is carefully placed, each pattern intentional - transforming simple fibres into sacred garments used in daily prayer and moments of deep connection.

For the Jewish community in Ethiopia, this work is more than craftsmanship. It is heritage, identity, and continuity.
We are honoured to witness and support these traditions, ensuring they continue to be preserved and celebrated for generations to come.

This week in Gondar, our founder, Jeremy Feit, and a group of passionate volunteers spent time with the Ethiopian Jewish community and saw our emergency feeding programme in action.

For many families, these meals are essential. The programme provides consistent access to food, supporting Ethiopian Jewish families as they navigate daily challenges and helping to ensure that no one is left without.

Rooted in community and connection, this work is about showing up and supporting Ethiopian Jews in a meaningful and consistent way. ✡️

Thank you to everyone who makes this possible.

6,000 people. One community. One unforgettable Seder.

Our founder and volunteers are on the ground in Gondar, Ethiopia, standing alongside the Jewish community as they prepare for what will be the world’s largest Passover Seder. From baking matzah to sharing messages of connection, resilience, and tradition, every moment is filled with meaning.

As Jeremy and our team address the community, you can feel it: the anticipation, the pride, and the power of coming together to celebrate freedom.

This is more than preparation. It’s heritage in motion. It’s community at scale. It’s Passover in its truest form.

Pesach is almost here, and preparations are already underway in Ethiopia 🇪🇹✨

From gathering ingredients to preparing communal spaces for the Seder, celebrating Pesach takes the effort of an entire community. These photos from previous years capture the joy, tradition, and togetherness that make the holiday so meaningful.

At SSEJ, we are proud to support Ethiopian Jewish communities as they prepare to celebrate this special time of year.

בית הכנסת התקווה של קהילת יהודי גונדר”

“The Tikvah (Hope) Synagogue of the Jewish Community of Gondar”

For decades, the Jewish community in Gondar has gathered in places like this to pray, study, and hold onto their connection to the Jewish people and to Jerusalem. Even while waiting, their faith, resilience, and hope have never faded.

Every sign, every synagogue, and every gathering is a reminder that the story of Ethiopian Jewry is still unfolding.
