The Armenian monastery complex Kecharis, located in the resort town of Tsakhkadzor, Armenia, in the Kotayk region. The image captures Armenian youth from an American shelter from Alexandropol (modern Gyumri), going on a summer hike and passing by the monastery carrying an American flag. The Kecharis Monastery, founded in the 11th century by the princes of Pakhlavuni, and it was an important religious and cultural center of medieval Armenia. The presence of the American flag symbolized aid and support from the United States to the Armenian people, especially orphans following the genocide by the Ottoman Empire. During this time, a short-lived U.S. partial administration took place which, if passed in the Senate would’ve seen a American-protectorate, Western Armenian state in modern-day Turkey, templated after President Woodrow Wilson (Wilsonian Armenia).

Melvin Morris became a Green Beret in 1961. Many years later in 2014 he received the Medal of Honor for his heroism in Vietnam when he used a small number of available grenades to repel a larger enemy force. He was shot several times during the encounter, but he survived the war and is currently 79 years old.
