As AAPI Heritage Month comes to a close, we're called to highlight the work of our movement partner DRUM - Desis Rising Up & Moving. As a multigenerational, membership-led organization, DRUM advocates for working-class South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities across NYC. Their campaigns address critical issues locally — such as housing insecurity, police accountability and public education funding — as well as international human rights.

Their recent organizing efforts have created art for the ceasefire movement, raised awareness around budget cuts to essential social services, and rallied members to publicly demand divestment from police and remove officers from mental health responses.

At a recent YOCCF session, we had the pleasure of hosting screenwriter, producer, and strategist Sheri Aguirre, who shared how United We Dream (UWD) leverages collaboration and creative storytelling to shift narratives and drive change.

UWD’s approach starts with defining core narrative threads, such as self-love, abundance, and collective care, through deep community engagement. Sheri offered insights for those looking to create narrative change, including embracing joy and courage in artistic expression.

This AAPI Heritage Month, we're proud to spotlight our movement partner, Caaav: Organizing Asian Communities!

Since 1986, CAAAV has been a beacon of empowerment, founded by Asian women to combat rising police and hate violence in New York communities. Over the years, their mission has evolved to address systemic racism and violence faced by Asian immigrant communities.

By focusing on neighborhoods like Chinatown and Astoria they're making strides in the fight against gentrification. CAAAV is building power and fighting for housing justice with and for their working-class Asian neighbors.
