On view May 16-Dec 6 at the Brooklyn Museum: “Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses” celebrates one of the most forward-thinking fashion designers of her generation.

A pioneer in the use of new technologies, Van Herpen transcends conventional clothing norms while embracing both traditional couture artisanship and innovative techniques. Ranging from the micro to the macro, the exhibition explores the body’s place in space, its relationship to clothing and its environment, and its future in a rapidly changing world.
More than 140 extraordinary haute couture creations are shown alongside contemporary artworks and designs—by artists including Philip Beesley, Rogan Brown, Casey Curran, Kim Keever, and Nick Knight—as well as scientific artifacts and natural history specimens such as coral, fossils, and skeletons.

Event this Friday: 5/29 from 9:30–11 AM at in Kingston, NY for a powerful morning with artist , exploring the layered, messy, transformative act of creating.

Working with fiber, found materials, repetition, and labor, Kat’s sculptures explore the deeply human process of carrying, concealing, surviving, and transforming. Her work holds both weight and release, asking what becomes possible when we stop hiding the truth of our experience and begin shaping something from it instead.

BOOK OF THE MONTH, available to check out from the Guild’s library!
Textiles: The Whole Story, Uses, Meaning, Significance by Beverly Gordon

There are few aspects of our lives―physical, emotional, spiritual―in which thread and fabrics do not play a notable part. Beverly Gordon reminds us memorably and movingly of the powerful significance of fabric throughout human history. The author bridges past and present, from the Stone Age to twenty-first-century “smart fabrics.” Her discussion integrates craft, art, science, history, and anthropology, and she
draws on examples from around the globe.

The NYGH Lending Library has hundreds of books and publications available to borrow for guild members. Visit www.nyhandweavers.org/library to see our full catalog.

This book of the month is a gift of Robin Vogel, in memory of her mother, Isa Vogel. October 10, 1938–February 16, 2026. From Isa Vogel, devoted textile artist and weaver. Thank you for enriching her life and creative pursuits.

Upcoming: “Fiber Forward” at Yellow Studio , part of Upstate Art Weekend, May 30 to June 29!
Opening Reception: Saturday May 30, 4 - 6pm
An artist talk is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, at 2 pm

Fiber Forward presents work that navigates the boundaries between tradition and innovation, material and meaning. The exhibition showcases fiber art as a site of experimentation, examining how artists are reimagining fiber as a vehicle for critical inquiry, spatial intervention, and personal expression. The works on view include sculpture, installation, embroidery, weaving, and mixed media, alongside activist craft kits, quilts made from repurposed domestic textiles, and large-scale fiber installations. Many of the artists work with found, secondhand, or repurposed materials, bringing new life to what has been discarded or overlooked.

SHOW & TELL: Donna Ritter

Indigo Waves
Silk habatoi. Pole-dyed in indigo twice. Dyeing this twice while scrunching it in opposite directions created an unexpected bubble pattern. Next time I would try to make it darker and be more precise.
