The Al music battle just took another major turn.
Universal Music Group is asking a federal court to dismiss the American Federation of Musicians’ lawsuit over its licensing deal with Udio, arguing the current union contract never established a payment rate for Al training.
The AFM says musicians deserve compensation when their recordings are used to train Al. UMG says Al is a new use that must be negotiated in the next contract
—not decided under the current one.
One thing is certain: this case could help shape how artists, musicians and labels get paid in the Al era.
This isn’t the end of the fight... it’s the beginning of the rules.
