IIE implements more than 200 international exchange programs benefiting over 30,000 men and women from 185 countries. Foremost is the world-renowned Fulbright Program, which IIE has administered on behalf of the U.S. Department of State since the program’s inception in 1946. The Institute also serves corporations, foundations, and government agencies worldwide, making available testing and advising services, scholarships, information on opportunities for international study, emergency assistance to students and scholars, and the IIENetwork membership program that links colleges and universities around the globe. Programs and Services:

• FELLOWSHIP AND SCHOLARSHIP MANAGEMENT. International exchange of students, scholars, and professionals in the U.S. and abroad.

• HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT. Programs in faculty exchange, curriculum development, institutional planning, research and capacity building for colleges, universities, and institutions of higher learning globally.

• EMERGENCY STUDENT AND SCHOLAR ASSISTANCE. Support and safe haven to scholars threatened as a result of their academic work. Assistance to students and scholars who face emergency situations, such as natural disasters.

• LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT /GLOBALTALENT SEARCH. Workshops, seminars, and study tours to develop leadership skills among students, teachers, professionals, and policy makers throughout the world. The 20,000 men and women annually from over 175 countries who participate in programs are:

🌍 For many college students, studying abroad starts with a passport—but the cost of applying for one can be a significant barrier.

Through the IIE American Passport Project, we’re on a mission to help 10,000 Pell-eligible students get passports by awarding micro-grants covering the passport application fee.

Now in its 6th year, the IIE American Passport Project has awarded $1M in grants and reached approximately 6,000 students. See the impact ⬇️

Academic exchange between North America and Europe has long fueled discovery, economic growth, and stronger societies. Today, there is commitment across the Atlantic for university partnerships to serve as engines for talent development and innovation and scientific advancement.

At last Monday, IIE, in partnership with DAAD, EAIE European Association for International Education, and AIEA | Association of International Education Administrators led Shaping Transatlantic Futures: Priorities, Partnerships, and Perspectives workshop, bringing together 50+ higher education leaders from Europe, Canada, and the United States that are building stronger, more strategic, and more sustainable transatlantic partnerships.

What we learned:

▪️Move beyond the MOU alone. Universities need to be intentional in setting up their partnerships. Work together to build the purpose and functions of partnerships to respond to a changing global landscape.

▪️Challenges regarding financial support remain. Focus on areas that are of mutual value to create spaces for joint resources and funding.

▪️What models of university partnerships are emerging? There is potential in partnerships that focus on regional networks, state networks, or alliances.

The discussion was informed by findings from our 2025 report with DAAD, Transatlantic Mobility in Higher Education and Research: A Cornerstone of Transatlantic Relations: https://bit.ly/3VJsccG.

The follow-up Transatlantic Mobility in Higher Education and Research report is expected next year.

For the last decade, we've had the honor and pleasure of witnessing Amy Baker, Clare Gossage, Jane Gilham, and staff at The PIE set out to recognize international education leaders, innovators, and otherwise unsung heroes of the field. It has been inspiring and valuable to see our peers persistently seek excellence and chart new territory in .

Over the years, we've been named a PIEoneer winner and finalist for various initiatives, including this year for our Global E3 Consortium. Thank you to The PIE for bestowing the Global E3 Consortium as a “Highly Commended” finalist in the Membership Organization of 2026 category!

We created the IIE Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E3) Consortium in 1995 to break down the barriers that often prevent engineering students from studying abroad. The consortium has grown to nearly 70 leading engineering colleges and universities across 26 countries and today, the study abroad rate among U.S. engineering students has grown more than 5x.

We'd like to congratulate all of the PIEoneer winners as well as the higher education institutions that power the Consortium.

🌍✈️ A passport is more than a travel document. It's often the first step toward a transformative international experience that can broaden horizons, open career pathways, and prepare students to lead in a global society.

While nearly 300,000 U.S. college students studied abroad for academic credit in 2023-24, that still represents only about 10% of all U.S. college students.

That's why IIE is committed to helping more students gain the international experiences—and related competencies—that prepare them to succeed in today's interconnected workforce and thrive well into the future.

This summer, we had the privilege of administering a brand-new exchange program focused on in-demand industries. The inaugural IIE Global Scholars Program Powered by the Exelon Foundation gave 17 students from U.S. colleges and universities the opportunity to explore the future of the energy sector through:

▪️academic learning,
▪️industry engagement,
▪️and an immersive experience in Chicago and the Netherlands.

Scholars strengthened their understanding of global energy challenges while building the adaptability, intercultural communication skills, and global perspectives employers increasingly value.
