“Hope is an action, just like peace.”

This was the piercing message that Israeli entrepreneur and peace activist Maoz Inon () shared in New York City last Shabbat as he and Aziz Abu Sarah () spoke about their New York Times bestselling book, “The Future Is Peace: A Shared Journey Across the Holy Land.”

After his parents were killed on October 7, 2023, Maoz recounted how his reality became “broken” on that fateful morning. Yet in the face of such tragic, unimaginable loss, he and his family made the difficult decision to “reject revenge” and continue choosing hope.

Today, Maoz works tirelessly to grow and sustain the peace movement on the ground in the region as efforts to build a better future become more vital than ever amid the realities of war.

This past Shabbat, we were honored to host Aziz Abu Sarah () and Maoz Inon () for an enlightening conversation during our special Friday night worship service centered on their New York Times bestselling book, “The Future Is Peace: A Shared Journey Across the Holy Land.”

In a moving discussion with Rabbi Joshua Davidson, Senior Rabbi of , Aziz shared how learning Hebrew became a turning point in his journey, recalling how his Ulpan teacher was the first Israeli to treat him with genuine compassion and care. He also shared his powerful experience visiting Yad Vashem soon thereafter and the profound impact of learning about the dehumanizing atrocities of the Holocaust.

Last night, The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Cultural Center was thrilled to partner with our friends on the other side of Central Park at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan as hundreds of people came out to support Israeli cinema at the Opening Night celebration of the 14th Annual Israel Film Center Festival ✨

One of Israel’s most acclaimed actors, Michael Aloni, officially kicked off the festival, followed by the New York Premiere screening of the delightful “Love, Statistically Speaking” and a great conversation with the film’s director, Amichai Greenberg 🎬

We caught up backstage with the “Shtisel” star and longtime friend of The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Cultural Center to talk about what sets Israeli film and television apart from Hollywood and what his go-to spot is when he visits New York… after he comes to Temple Emanu-El first, of course 😎

Last night was the 79th Annual Tony Awards, Broadway’s biggest night, and we were thrilled to see several friends of The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Cultural Center take home theater’s highest honor, including:

🏆 Shoshana Bean, winner of Featured Actress in a Musical for “The Lost Boys,” who most recently serenaded attendees at The BIG Shabbat alongside Tony Award nominee Steven Skybell

🏆 John Lithgow, winner of Lead Actor in a Play for “Giant,” who joined us earlier this season with playwright Mark Rosenblatt to discuss their Tony Award-nominated play tackling antisemitism

🏆 Michael Arden, who took home another Tony Award for “The Lost Boys,” and whom we’ve had the great honor of hosting previously in connection with his Tony Award-winning productions

🏆 Nathan Lane, who accepted the Tony Award on behalf of last night’s Best Revival of a Play winner, “Death of a Salesman,” for which he was also nominated for Lead Actor in a Play, and whom we were honored to host previously alongside the late, great Chita Rivera

In the popular imagination, and should be the bitterest of enemies.

When Aziz was nine years old, his older brother was arrested from their home in a small West Bank town just outside Jerusalem on suspicion of stone throwing. Released a year later, he died within weeks of internal injuries.

On October 7, 2023, Maoz’s parents were killed when their home on a moshav near the Gaza border was struck in a Hamas attack.

Animosity for the “other,” then, would have been easy.
Instead, both men chose another path: trading anger for partnership, and grief for a shared commitment to reconciliation. Their story is a powerful rebuttal to cycles of violence.

In their bestselling book, “The Future Is Peace,” Maoz and Aziz recount a week-long journey across Israel and the West Bank, exploring what connects their peoples. At every stop, they faced the same question: In the face of so much loss, how can hope endure?

JUST ANNOUNCED | Israeli actor Michael Aloni will headline the opening night of the 14th Annual Israel Film Center Festival at The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Cultural Center.

Before the New York Premiere of “Love, Statistically Speaking,” join Aloni, one of Israel’s most acclaimed actors, for a special opening night introduction. Following the screening, there will be a conversation with the film’s director, Amichai Greenberg.

Renowned psychotherapist Esther Perel () and actor, producer, director and activist Olivia Wilde () recently joined us at The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Cultural Center in NYC.

Reflecting on 20 years since the release of Esther’s groundbreaking book, “Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence,” these two dynamic women explored how our world has changed since its publication, including the rise of AI.

Olivia posed a question that would have sounded almost unimaginable two decades ago: “How do we convince people it’s worth it to be with humans?” In response, Esther shared what she called a “threshold” moment, revealing that she recently conducted her first-ever couples therapy session between a human and AI, prompting audible gasps and disbelief throughout the packed audience.
