Members Come First Slate Social Service Employees making a change for our fellow members. Alex Parker has been an AFSCME/DC-37 member, activist and leader for 28 years.

He began his civil service career in 1992 as a Juvenile Counselor and a member of Local 1457. He quickly became a true union activist and rose to become a member of the Local 1457 Executive Board and then served as it’s President for 9 years. During this time, Alex also served as a member of the DC-37 Executive Board. In 2009, Alex merged Local 1457 with SSEU Local 371 in order to secure stronger

benefits and legal services for his members than Local 1457 could afford to give them. He sacrificed his Presidency and DC-37 Executive Board positions for the benefit of his members. Alex then served as an SSEU Local 371 Grievance Representative for 6 years during which he became a master of the local’ s Collective Bargaining Agreement and learned about the issues and needs of Local 371 members across the city and all of its agencies. He also spear-headed sweeping investigations into overtime and FLSA violations across the city and launched and supervised multiple federal court lawsuits which have already yielded over $20,000,000 in payments to members. While happy with the new benefits he secured for his Local 1457 members by the merger, Alex became increasingly disappointed by the leadership of Local 371. He found the Union to be bloated with disinterested and self-serving staff and led by officers who put themselves and their life-styles ahead of the needs of the membership. He became deeply disturbed by the vast sums of money being spent on the Local’s leadership and its supporters. He made every effort to bring about change from within but was ignored and pushed aside. Finally, he could no longer stand idly by, so he resigned and vowed to lead a movement for true change. Alex believes that SSEU Local 371 needs change from top to bottom, that SSEU Local 371 needs strong, member-first leadership genuinely committed to transparency and good governance, and that the complacency and selfishness that define the current administration has no place in today’s world. The old guard has become an obstacle to advancing worker rights. SSEU Local 371 needs leadership who will work solely for the membership, leaders who refuse to compromise just to get along with management. Alex calls upon all SSEU Local 371 members to commit to working with him to restore their once mighty, mighty union to its glory days. He and his team ask you all to partner with Parkervision 2020 now — you deserve more — you can have more, and with your support:
