Hawk and Monarch Watch

Join Don Riepe for a walk in Fort Tilden to observe the annual Hawk Migration that passes through our city at this time of year. We will meet in front of the Chapel at Fort Tilden and then walk over to the Hawk Watch Platform. Dress warm and for windy weather, and bring your binoculars. We look forward to spotting Ospreys, Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, and learn about the many other hawk species, and how to identify them in the air. Edgar the friendly egret visits my dock and kitchen almost every day in summer. He leaves Jamaica Bay at the end of October for his winter home down south ( somewhere).

Whether you're up in New York or down in South Jersey, we've got some cool events for you!

Join us and our partners at the 9th Annual Raptorama Festival at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge this Sunday, 9.27, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will be two live animal education demonstrations led by the Wildlife Center of Long Island, plus walks with park rangers and partners to look at the raptors that are traveling through Jamaica Bay on their fall migration. Park partners and other organizations will have family-friendly activities available at tables outside of the visitor center.

​Homeschool families can join the American Littoral Society for a day at the bay! Through exploration and hands-on learning, homeschool students ages 5 and up will discover the unique ecosystems along the Delaware Bay from the salt marsh to the bay beaches. Connect with other families and enjoy interactive activity stations including seine net fishing, a bay scavenger hunt, games, and up-close encounters.

On Wednesday the 30th we'll explore the maritime forest and the salt marsh in search of yellow-billed cuckoo, ruby-throated hummingbird, black-&-white warblers, royal terns, great blue herons, great egrets, and black-bellied plovers.

If you're up by Jamaica Bay, NY you can join Don Riepe to learn about pollinators and then go on a hike in search of local and migrating monarch butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Saturday the 26th from 10am-2pm.

Pollinator Walk and Talk

Meet at the Jamaica Bay Refuge visitor center at 10am for a slide program about pollinators followed by a hike to look for local and migrating monarch butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, hummingbirds and other pollinators.

There's still time for you to get over to the beach with us!

Come to Sandy Hook to witness the fall migration of various species of shorebirds and songbirds as they stop here on their journeys. We've got mornings and evenings available for you to join our expert birder and share bird ID tips, highlighting Sandy Hook's important role as a habitat for wildlife.

We've got two Homeschool Family Fun Days for you to join us, one up in Sandy Hook and another down in South Jersey at Fortescue Beach. Come for a day of coastal exploration and hands-on learning, connecting with other families while discovering New Jersey's unique marine environment.​

If you're up in New York, you can meet with our own Don Riepe for a Pollinator Walk and Talk at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Hike the refuge looking for and learning about monarch butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.
