πŸŽ‰ Breakdancing at the Olympics 2024: A Milestone for Hip Hop! πŸ†

I'm overwhelmed with joy as I watch the b-girl battles at the ! This is a monumental moment for hip-hop culture, and seeing breakdancing recognized as an Olympic sport is amazing.

The Heartbeat of Hip Hop πŸ’“
Breakdancing, or breaking, has been a foundational element of hip-hop since the 1970s. Emerging from the streets of New York City, it provided an expressive outlet for youth and became a powerful tool for storytelling and resistance. Today, it continues to inspire and unite communities around the world.

B-Girls in Breaking: Making History πŸ“œ
Women have played a pivotal role in the evolution of breakdancing. According to recent statistics, about 23% of competitive breakers are women, which continues to grow as more b-girls step into the spotlight and gain recognition for their incredible talent and dedication.

Honoring La Rokafella 🌟
I want to give a special shoutout to La Rokafella of the BX, founder of Full Circle Souljahs. She has been a guiding force in the breakdancing community, particularly through her unwavering support and leadership at Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen in the Boogie Down Bronx. Rokafella taught me how to respect the art form even more than I initially did. Her talent, passion, and commitment have brought so much to our MHHK showcase, elevating the platform for countless b-girls and inspiring many. Her unextinguishable fire and dedication have kept the spirit of breaking alive and thriving.

Saluting Lady Champ 🌟
I also want to give props to another legendary veteran from my hometown, Chicagoβ€”Lady Champ. She championed breakdancing, overcame paralysis, and made a triumphant return to the scene. Her resilience, strength, and contributions to hip-hop are truly priceless and continue to inspire many.

Celebrating the Future πŸŽ‰
As I watch these Olympic battles, I am moved to tears, thinking of the veterans who dedicated their lives to this art form. Special shout out to all my sisters in the gameβ€”your dedication and passion have paved the way for future generations.

Breakdancing isn't just a sport; it's a cultural movement, a testament to the power of hip-hop. Here's to more b-girls breaking boundaries and making history! 🌍πŸ’ͺ🏽

What an amazing journey!

This year is year 16!

Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen has been the most powerful form of therapy for us (Tere and Kathleen). We have learned so much about ourselves as individuals through this process of creating and executing this dope event annually. As a duo we represent September Libra women who have truly worked together to create justice-centered magic.

I am so proud of us for being able to stick this out for almost two decades. I am even more proud of us for choosing each other every year and having the best intentions and commitment for our community's healing and evolution.

We did that!

I am in awe as I reflect and look at years of photos filled with framily. It's actually pretty overwhelming emotional to look at it from the beginning in 2007. Can you imagine? Tens of thousands of pictures and so much footage. Wow! So many relationships formed, children born and people that we adore who have become ancestors all on one hard drive.
It's WILD!

Kathleen and I decided to be courageous enough to REST so that we could really look at ourselves and see how far we have come but most importantly, TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES. We can't just be out here preaching about self-care and not really applying it.

In truth, we are all human and deserve time to focus on healing some of the wounds that don't allow us to flourish like we are supposed to. We know that it is our responsibility to engage in self-awareness and so that is what we have chosen for our unit at this point. It has been so inspiring to see Kathleen, who is 10 years younger than me become the woman that she is today. I am the proudest big sister out here.

We have basically grown up together. She has been there for all of the highs and lows, and I am forever thankful that HIP HOP and the desire to be servant leaders allowed for our paths to cross in order to build this beautiful sisterhood and community.

What more can I ask for?

I feel full in my heart and more rested in my Spirit.

We love you all so much and send the best possible energy we can muster up to you and yours.
