We imagine a future where the whole of society meaningfully engages in the protection, resettlement, and integration of refugees and other forcibly displaced people.

As January comes to a close, we’re reflecting on the power of community.

In Minneapolis, across Minnesota, and nationwide, sponsors and partners continue to show what welcome looks like in action - neighbors supporting neighbors.

Community sponsorship is built on relationships, dignity, and the belief that everyone deserves a safe place to belong. We’re grateful for the communities carrying this work forward.

Meet Brooke, a mother of six and a seven-time sponsor in Wisconsin. Like many welcomers, Brooke was moved by her values—compassion, fairness, and a deep belief that welcoming newcomers strengthens who we are as a nation. She and her church community have welcomed families from around the world, exchanging culture, friendship, and hope.

Stepping up became a way of life for Mary from Albuquerque, who along with her husband decided to volunteer to support refugees in need. Mary has welcomed several refugee families, including an Afghan ally family who arrived this September.

In the light of recent news, stories like hers are critical in reminding us of why we continue to fight to protect the freedom to welcome.

Meet Bonnie, from Utah, whose life has been changed by sponsorship. With other families, her church, and members of the community, Bonnie welcomed an Afghan ally family, making sure they had everything needed to thrive.

Bonnie’s story illustrates how ordinary acts of welcome transform lives of newcomers and the Americans who welcome—especially at a time like this. Cuts to the number of refugees who can be resettled to the United States means thousands of refugees are waiting in limbo, despite already being approved for resettlement after years of security screenings, vetting, and processing.

Even with those setbacks, Bonnie and people like you continue to turn disruption into momentum, showing that the commitment to welcoming others still runs deeper than any single policy or decision.

Jennifer, who has welcomed Afghan and Ukrainian families since she become a sponsor four years ago, said she started out as a "party of one". But as news spread through church bulletins, she found support from her community through rent assistance, donations, toys, and even a car.

Welcome is not a one-time act. It's an ongoing commitment, and together, through sponsorship, advocacy, and solidarity, we can keep that promise alive and demonstrate that Americans are ready and able to welcome all refugee families fleeing war and persecution, regardless of nationality or religion.

As the number of refugees who can be resettled to the United States decreases once again, tens of thousands remain waiting abroad—including loved ones and family members whom sponsors had hoped to welcome.

Community Sponsorship Hub remains steadfast in supporting communities and sponsors who continue to open their hearts and homes. Across the country, Americans are finding new ways to extend welcome—through friendship, mentorship, and practical support for newcomers rebuilding their lives. Acts of welcoming are more important now than ever.
