The fireworks have faded, but the welcome doesn't.

Coming out of the Fourth of July weekend, we're reflecting on what welcome really looks like. For refugees and newcomers building a life here, it looks like neighbors who show up and a community that says: you belong.

Welcome has always been part of the American story. Freedom is where it starts. Belonging is what we build.

That's the heart of community sponsorship, and there's a role in it for everyone.

Today is World Refugee Day.

Around the world, more than 117 million people have been forced from their homes, about one in every 70 people on Earth. Behind that number are 117 million stories of courage: people who left nearly everything behind and chose to begin again.

Today, we celebrate them. The newcomers who became neighbors. The students, the workers, the teammates, the friends. The parents building a future for their kids. Refugees don't just rebuild their own lives, they strengthen every community lucky enough to welcome them.

All week we've shared what welcome looks like. Today we honor the people at the heart of it.

How you can help:
-Speak up for welcoming policies and the right to seek safety.
-Support the newcomers in your community and the organizations walking alongside them.
-Get to know someone new, and help them feel at home.

No one chooses to flee. But every day, millions choose to hope, to rebuild, and to begin again in a place that isn't yet home.

The least we can do is meet that courage with a welcome.

Refugees belong here, and our communities are stronger, richer, and more whole because of them.

Today, we honor Juneteenth and the freedom it represents.

It's a day to celebrate the resilience, hope, and joy carried forward ever since. Happy Juneteenth.

A first day of class. A diploma. A career taking shape. This is some of what welcome makes possible.

Across the country, refugee students are doing remarkable things with the chance to learn. Through our Higher Education Initiatives, newcomers are earning degrees and training for careers as nurses, engineers, teachers, and the professionals our communities count on.

Welcome opens the door. What they build once they walk through it is all their own.

This World Refugee Day, soccer's biggest stage is telling a bigger story.

Ahead of the World Cup, UNHCR launched More Than a Game, including its Gamechanging Team: eleven players whose lives were all shaped by displacement. Some of the sport's brightest talent began in refugee camps and resettled communities.

The bigger picture is this. More than 117 million people worldwide have been forced to flee their homes, about one in every 70 people on Earth. For many of them, soccer becomes a lifeline. In refugee camps it gives kids structure, healing, and a place to belong. For newcomers, a local team is often where they make their first friends and find their footing in a new country.

That's what makes it more than a game. It's belonging. It's a fresh start. It's home.

This week, learn one refugee's story and share it.

"If you make one person's life better, you've changed the entire world for that person."

That's how one of our sponsors describes what it means to welcome a refugee. And it runs both ways, because the people we welcome change our world too.

That's what's worth celebrating: not only that a refugee finds a welcome, but everything they bring once they do. The courage to start over. New friendships and traditions. Neighbors who make a place feel more like home.

Tell us what welcome looks like where you are.

What does welcome look like?

That's the question we're sitting with this week. World Refugee Day is this Saturday, June 20, and between now and then we'll be sharing stories from sponsors, newcomers, and communities who answer it every day. A shared meal. A first apartment. A friendship that outlasts the paperwork.

This week is also a chance to celebrate refugees themselves. Their courage to begin again, and everything they bring to the places that welcome them: new traditions, new businesses, and neighbors and friends who make a community feel more like home.

Welcoming refugees has never been only something we do for them. It makes all of us better.

Our World Refugee Day newsletter is out now, with reflections from sponsors, a look at the refugee students building their futures through our Higher Education Initiative, and real ways you can support newcomers right now.

As January comes to a close, we’re reflecting on the power of community.

In Minneapolis, across Minnesota, and nationwide, sponsors and partners continue to show what welcome looks like in action - neighbors supporting neighbors.

Community sponsorship is built on relationships, dignity, and the belief that everyone deserves a safe place to belong. We’re grateful for the communities carrying this work forward.
