🎥 This Mental Health Awareness Month, listen to someone who's lived it, like LIUNA Mason Tenders' Training Fund Instructor Jamal Fowler, who knows:

"My Union was pivotal, was instrumental in my recovery. I had the resources. I had the people.

"When you're able to speak honestly and candidly about your addiction, when you when you're able to speak with confidence and tell people about your shortcomings, people recognize that. And people understand that. And that resonates with people.

"We're pushing out the narrative that it's okay not to be okay. It's okay to have the conversation.

"A lot of times you subscribe to the school of thought like, it's not cool to speak about that. And you can kind of like correlate that with the construction workers. You know, that macho, 'I'm tough. I'm strong. I have the fortitude.'

"But nah. You need that support system to show them and say, ‘Hey, listen brother, sister. I went down that road. I understand what it is to suffer. You don't got to suffer alone. You go head, we could speak. Let's try to figure this out together.’

"And we're trying to change the narrative where it's not weak to speak. Right? It's important that we do that."

🎥 This Mental Health Awareness Month, listen to someone who's lived it, like
LIUNA Laborers' Local 172 Journeyworker Brian Lemoine, who knows:

"Anybody can show up to work for a day, two days, even a week, collect a paycheck, and be done.

"I definitely want to be in this for the long haul. I want to work a full 25 to 30 year career and retire one day with a pension. And I do realize that, you know, my mental health has to be right for me in order to succeed and obtain that.

"The more outspoken I am about being in recovery and being sober and wanting to spread mental health awareness, the more I've been embraced by the Unions, by the contractors.

"For me, mental health awareness is much more than just a month. I've been sober now for over ten years. That's every month, every day.

"If I only had a chance to say one thing to anybody that was out there listening today it would be, 'If you're struggling and you even think you need help, please reach out for help. I'm here. The Union’s here. Somebody's there to help. Please ask for it.'"

That's why it's so important to check in with your brothers & sisters.

🇺🇸 On Memorial Day, we remember the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service of our nation.

Take time today to honor and uplift those who made the ultimate sacrifice to secure our freedoms.

We are forever in their debt.

Huge thanks to author Vivek Chibber as well as our community partners and Brigade members for attending: “From Theory To Action: Organizing For Real Change”. The evening event was more than a panel, but a space to connect, strategize, and strengthen solidarity. ✊

Be sure to check out the book: Confronting Capitalism: How The World Works and How To Change It.

When workers and communities unite, we win!

💭 Don't ignore the signs! Taking time to reflect on our mental health can help us see when we might need support.

Let's give our mental health the importance it deserves. Good mental health is just as important as good physical health.

¡No ignoremos las señales! Si reflexionamos sobre nuestra salud mental podremos identificar cuando necesitemos apoyo.

Démosle a nuestra salud mental la importancia que se debe. Es tan importante como nuestra salud física.

🎥 This Mental Health Awareness Month, listen to someone who's lived it: LiUNA Eastern Region Assistant Manager Bernard Callegari. His message is a simple one:

"I know it might not feel like it's okay, but it's okay to not be okay, man.

"It's okay to not have the answers.

"And it's okay to need help.

"We want LIUNA and our Union halls to be the first place that our members go to when they are struggling with anything, especially something as sensitive as addiction or mental health."

If you're having an imminent mental health crisis, please call the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

💪 We are not alone even if we feel that way.

Mental health issues are more common than what we may think and they happen to many of us.

Let's talk with each other. We never know who might need our support.

No estamos solos aun si nos sentimos así.

Los problemas de salud mental son más comunes de lo creemos y le ocurren a muchos de nosotros.

Hablemos con nuestros compañeros. No sabemos quién necesite apoyo.

🥵 Heat Safety Alert! With temperatures set to break 90°F through Wednesday, and little time to acclimatize to the heat, it's more important than ever to Work SAFE:

• Wear sunscreen: sunburn can inhibit the body's natural cooling mechanism;

• Stay hydrated: drink 8 oz of water every 15 min while working. And keep drinking water after work to keep hydrating;

• Avoid caffeine, soda & alcohol: they can speed dehydration and contribute to heat cramps;

• Use personal cooling items: when possible, utilize cold packs/compresses and cooling headbands;

• Find shade: If you're on lunch or on break, find shade whenever possible; and

• Use the buddy system: keep an eye on your brothers & sisters. If they begin to exhibit signs of heat illness (extreme headaches; excessive sweating; nausea or vomiting), be sure to take immediate action to cool them and alert a supervisor.
