Mama Glow Webinar - Celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week - August 30th, 6:30-8pm ET

Join us for the 11th annual celebration of Black Breastfeeding Week 2023!

Black Breastfeeding Week was founded by three Black women, Kimberly Seals Allers, Kiddada Green and Anayah Sangodele Ayoka. 2023 marks the 11th year of Black Breastfeeding Week. This year, the theme is: We Outside! Celebrating Connection & Our Communities. This theme grounds us in joy and reminds us that we are stronger together. This is week where we celebrate our triumphs as a community while also acknowledging the challenges and work that needs to be done.

There are unique barriers that Black women and birthing people face when it comes to birth and breastfeeding. Black women have the lowest breastfeeding initiation rates at 64% and the shortest breastfeeding duration, around six weeks — according to the Centers for Disease Control. Black breastfeeding is not only a reproductive right, but an act of resistance, a radical act to reclaim for ourselves and our babies.

In this webinar will address:
1️⃣ Culturally competent lactation support for Black birthing people

2️⃣ Structural gaps that impact Black breastfeeding outcomes

3️⃣ The Doula’s role in lactation support

4️⃣ Black breastfeeding as an expression of healing and poli

5️⃣ Community care, storytelling and feeding legacies

We will be joined in conversation with the following incredible panelists:

Sherisa Moore - Registered Nurse, IBCLC and Doula

Sterling Grey-Simmon - Certified Breastfeeding Specialist & Full Spectrum Doula

Ingrid Silva - Ballerina and activist

Latham Thomas - Founder of Mama Glow (moderator)

This webinar is presented by:
Elvie's mission is to empower women through radical female-first technology. Elvie is a proud supporter of Mama Glow and is honored to present this conversation for Black Breastfeeding Week.

When you register, you are eligible to WIN 🙌🏾 the Elvie Double Pump, the smallest, quietest and smartest wearable breast pump, valued at $549.99

LET’S PASS THE MOMNIBUS ACT! 🙌🏾Introduced by Representatives Lauren Underwood and Alma Adams, Senator Cory Booker, and Members of the Black Maternal Health Caucus in 2021, the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act (the Momnibus) aims to address these disparities—and America’s maternal health crisis overall—at the source to create conditions conducive to safe birthing experiences.

The Momnibus will once again be led by Rep Underwood and Adams, Booker in the Senate, and the Black Maternal Health Caucus for reintroduction for the 118th Congress this year.

The Momnibus aims to comprehensively address the factors driving maternal mortality, morbidity, and health disparities through the inclusion of thirteen individual bills, each investing into specific spheres to improve outcomes for birthing people. Among the bills is the Social Determinants for Moms Act, which will establish a task force to evaluate the maternal health crisis through a holistic lens and provide funding for community-based organizations integral to the promotion of maternal health. Accompanying this bill is The WIC Extension for New Moms Act, which extends eligibility for WIC in the postpartum and breastfeeding periods to ensure the nutritional needs of birthing people and their babies are met. This reflects one of two changes from the last set of bills, which consolidated the two acts.
