We wanted to draw your attention to this incredibly important recent report from the New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli on shortages of health care professionals in rural New York State Counties.

Findings show that the 16 rural New York counties have 0.5 pediatricians for every 10,000 people – less than one-fifth of the state ratio (2.8), one-third of the U.S. (1.8), and less than half the GMENAC guideline (1.2). There are no pediatric physicians in three of the 16 counties.

The report specifically highlights the importance of expanding school-based health and dental care as a vital strategy to increasing health care access.

Please check out this excellent policy brief from the Step Two Policy Project. The brief has many interesting findings, but particularly focuses on the benefits of alignment and increased support for SBHCs, SBHC-Ds (dental services), and SBMHs (mental health services) in an initiative to expand community schools in NYS.

"Given the current uncertainty of federal healthcare and education funding to states, it is more important than ever to maximize the value of State spending. Linking school-based health services and Community Schools is a low-barrier, high-impact approach to improving educational and health outcomes for students, and to better engaging families and the surrounding community in supporting student success."
