The Choral Society

The Choral Society Downtown NYC's 150-voice masterworks powerhouse directed by John Maclay. Based at Grace Church on Broadway & 10th Street.

The Choral Society is a 150-voice ensemble of experienced professional and avocational singers who volunteer their time and talents in the service of the choral art form. Critics claim that in a number of recent hearings no other chorus in town “has been even close to the level of professionalism of this strictly volunteer group.”

Supported by some of New York’s finest freelance orchestra players

- musicians who play regularly with the Orchestra of Saint Luke’s, the American Symphony Orchestra and other major ensembles - the Choral Society’s concerts are designed to bring the arts directly to the community through the uniquely inclusive medium of choral singing. The Choral Society is in residence at Grace Church in New York, one of the city’s most renowned architectural landmarks. Anyone interested in learning about the history of this choir in detail should read Stacy Horn's book 'Imperfect Harmony: Finding Happiness Singing With Others', published in 2013

Most of what we consider Mozart’s greatest music was composed over a single decade, during his time in Vienna.

Mozart did NOT have a silly laugh 😤 Despite written proof that he had a juvenile sense of humor, there is no evidence to suggest he had a shrill giggle. *shudder*

Salieri was actually a friend and colleague of Mozart, not an archenemy.

Mozart held a remarkably elaborate, solemn funeral for his pet starling on June 4, 1787, featuring a procession of friends in mourning attire and a personalized poem. The composer was deeply attached to the bird—which he bought after it learned to sing one of his concertos—and buried it in his garden, creating a heartfelt, often melancholic, and humorous epitaph.

Joseph Haydn viewed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the greatest composer of his time, often praising him without jealousy and admitting his superiority in composition. Haydn deeply admired Mozart’s “inimitable” works, particularly his genius for opera, emotional depth, and technical skill, which he famously defended to others.

Mozart had a well documented obsession with scatological humor, often writing vulgar letters filled with pop jokes, f***s, and flatulence to friends and family. 💩
