APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR FALL 2026

Classes begin September 14, 2026

Psychoanalysis offers the deepest, most comprehensive understanding of how the mind works, and psychoanalytic training provides the tools to effectively resolve problems in living and unleash human potential.

For over fifty years, the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies has trained people from all educational backgrounds – mental health, the arts, literature, philosophy, education, and business, to name a few – in our licensure-qualifying program. The comprehensive training in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis equips students to become skilled clinicians who utilize both their intellectual insight and emotional understanding. Those who have already had training in other mental health disciplines find that psychoanalytic training enhances their therapeutic ability and makes their work with patients more effective and rewarding.

CMPS offers:

Licensure-qualifying psychoanalytic training
Personalized instruction in small, interactive classes geared toward helping students succeed
Courses taught by practicing psychoanalysts who bring a clinical perspective to the theoretical material
Supervised practice in our on-site clinic
Preparation for independent practice post-graduation
Evening classes to accommodate students' work schedules
Full- and part-time options available

A master's degree or higher (in any field) is required for admission.

We welcome students from all educational backgrounds.

We are enriched by and welcome a diverse student body.

CMPS Annual Conference (Virtual): Silence is an essential clinical tool that can be used to facilitate analytic work, from developing the transference to regulating frustration and communicating feeling. However, a form of "learned silence" can drown out this therapeutic quiet, particularly with regard to confronting racism in our consultation rooms. This conference will explore the ways we avoid our patients' racial traumas and fail to address prejudice in our training institutes. Facing these learned silences, which often take the form of countertransference resistance, can expand our clinical vocabulary, promote richer communication between patient and analyst, and deepen the analytic work.

Beverly J. Stoute, MD, is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. She is a founding member of Black Psychoanalysts Speak. She is in full-time private practice in Atlanta.

The newest episode of features CMPS faculty member and NBiP’s Founding Editor Tracy Morgan in conversation with literary scholar and psychoanalyst Emma Lieber on her new book, The Writing Cure

Listen here: https://apple.co/35w1r5e

The Writing Cure (Bloomsbury, 2020), Lieber’s first book, is a hybrid text—equal parts the work of an analysand, a new clinician, a scholar of Russian literature, and a divorcing mother. It is also the work of a Lacanian-influenced analyst whose analytic credential comes from an institute not especially associated with the work of Lacan; as such, the book functions as a kind of “pass”, a representation of what it is that the author wants to present to a community of analysts who she hopes will see her as a peer.

Her writing is creaturely by which I mean her words are close to the ground. She is funny. She is droll. She takes you into a nook and a cranny and your heart breaks. Always almost conversational, until she stops talking to you. The result is very beautiful and elusive. Her voice is precisely that: hers. She reveals but also conceals. The reader could want more. The reader could want less. But the reader is left wanting. How else can an analyst write about her own treatment but to tell the truth only to also tell it (a la E. Dickinson) a tad slant?

Embracing auto-theory as a burgeoning psychoanalyst is no simple task. Lieber refers to certain writers bearing this hyphenated moniker, among them Maggie Nelson, Paul Preciado and Barbara Browning but not her own analyst who is known for her use of the same genre. Of course reading about an analysis—like watching two people f**k in a car—can feel prurient: “I didn’t mean to look but then I could not turn away.” Lieber nevertheless finds a way to circumvent our voyeuristic wishes. We meet her and then again, we are left wondering; we are left to wonder—which is kind of perfect for a book written by an analyst about her analysis—about her. She remains through her final written utterances, a powerful transference-magnet.
